Koda, you rock! I'd passed by a million times promising a visit and when our sushi craving hit the other night, we finally strolled on over. No reservation necessary, just walked right in and were greeted warmly and asked to choose our own seating (I always like that). We spent a total of $65 during happy hour - 4 large beers, spicy tuna on crispy rice, edamame, charlotte's web roll (soft shell crab), spicy tuna roll, dynamite (baked) mussels, chicken gyozas, green tea ice cream, and strawberry mochi. Yeah, we can eat! We loved each and every item and felt we got a good value for what we ordered. Our favorites were definitely the spicy tuna roll (sometimes simplicity is best!) and the dynamite mussels. Now, I am someone who isn't a huge fan of mussels, but when done right, they melt in your mouth and give you a taste of the ocean without being 'fishy.' Koda does their mussels right! We had no trouble clearing the order. We also felt the spicy tuna on crispy rice was well executed, with the rice being perfectly crispy on the outside and sticky and warm inside. Service here was prompt though I can imagine it getting packed in this intimate establishment on a busy weekend evening. We'll be returning soon for more tastings of their extensive menu (think mostly creative rolls, with some sushi and sashimi options).

The $5 sushi roll happy hour is a must do. It's good quality sushi with great service! This time we tried the lychee ice cream which was to die for!

Just walked in off the street was in the mood to try new restaurants. Ordered a tuna roll , inari, a glass of plum infused wine and an order of frys. The resturant is small but nice but not fancy; decore is modern Japaneese and staff are nice. First wine came out / great mixture of plum and sparkling A+ Second was the yucan frys again great. Third was the inari which was good nothing crazy special the tuna rolls was double the size of a regular roll and good quality tuna, it was so good I ordered another overall fish was a 4 of 5 but the price was right

I have been here for over 45 minutes now and I haven't even gotten my order taken yet. I was very excited to eat here and now I feel like they don't care for there customers. The ONLY hostess is outside on her cell phone. The sushi chef is taking my order and then he will go back to making my sushi which is if you ask me gross.

This restaurant is exactly what you want from a hole-in-the-wall sushi place. Delicious sushi and edamame and sake bombers at a reasonable price. It's in a great location so I always love stopping at the comic book store before pigging out on sushi. I'm actually very picky about my sushi and this place did not disappoint. The service was very good, and street parking is easily available depending on the times you go in, although I believe there is also parking in the back of the restaurant.

We had our game night there. Not only was the food and ambiance incredible the staff was amazing and attentive. The manager Harry was AWESOME. Thanks Koda!

Solid sushi happy hour. The eel nigiri, salmon nigiri, spicy tuna roll and California tempura roll were all delicious. The sushi chefs were fun and accommodating, they offered those at the bar samples of fish they were searing. I'm not sure why this place doesn't have a higher rating. I'll definitely be coming back.

I was super excited about this place, because they have so many delicious vegetarian options! We tried the veggie roll and the veggie crunch roll, and both were great. Unfortunately, there were several fruit flies flying around the area where the sushi was made. I realize that wasn't the worst thing that could have happened. However, at the end of our meal, a ginormous spider crawled over the sushi bar and disappeared into the depths of the kitchen, and that was just one insect too many. I have my doubts about how hygienic this place is, and don't want to come back :-/

I've returned many times since my last review and the service has continued to go up. Also they were playing He Man one time and I thought it was awesome and hilarious. Love me some Koda happy hr! :)!

I came during happy hour on a Saturday afternoon. I really enjoyed myself. The sushi was decent, The service was quick and efficient. I waitress was on her game. I was just about to use one of my sushi pieces to scrape the last of the sauce off my plate when she hurriedly brought over more sauce without me having to ask. Very attentive! I had the large sAKE FOR $10 .......I was going to oder the regualar size for $5 on the happy hour menu, but the waitress suggested that my friend and i get the large and share ....... The large size sake look like child size sake ......AND FOR $10---- I FELT RIPPED OFF! I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A BEER. Good food! Good service! Order the beer! Convenient parking in back.

If your website says you're open until 11, and yelp says you're open until 11, and the sign on your door says you're open until 11, and you close at 10:10 and the guy inside pointedly ignores the confused people knocking on the window, you're going to have a bad review. The sushi may be great, but now I won't find out, because I will be taking my business elsewhere.

  • Aaron D.

Great sushi. I had a Philadelphia roll and an order of their crispy rice. If you pay three dollars more they add spicy tuna to the crispy rice, making it eight dollars. So good! I gave a four star because the sushi chef was having a loud argument with the staff right in front of everyone. Which would make anyone uncomfortable. But, he then made some great sushi. On top of the great food they have Kirin and Sapporo on tap. And they keep it nice and cold. On top of all of that, their happy hour is from noon to 7:pm. Most everything is $5. Draft beer is only $4. I wish I lived closer. Well, that's not true. Then I'd be in silver lake. Let's say instead, I wish they were closer to me. This would be a regular hang for me.

I don't understand the 3 stars. The salmon fusion roll is the best roll in LA. Hands down. Just rolled thru for maybe my 30th time and had some salmon sushi to wash down the palate. It was like butter!!!!

  • Christopher M.

Please read to the end. I really like this place. And the reason for my review is somewhat selfish. I am concerned that it never seems that busy- and if it were to close I would be left with several places in the silverlake area that just aren't as good- and which don't provide as much value. Summary: fish quality is top of the heap for this price point/neighborhood. I eat sashimi and sushi alsmot exclusively. For example, I just had excellent uni sushi during happy hour for $4. That's unheard of. The quality of the uni was better or at least equivalent to what is served at Nobu where I've eaten it countless times and where it costs many times the price. Although I don't often eat them the rolls are very nice. Try the salmon skin hand roll. Fantastic. CAVEAT: sushi preparation AND the quality of fish is highly dependent upon the sushi chef. When chefs come and go the quality goes up and down. The only chef I can vouch for at Koda at this time is Yudi. He's very good. It makes a huge difference and again, he is the only one I can vouch for. I call to ask if he is working. As of this writing he works every day except Tuesday and Wednesday. The service staff are lovely- Enjoy!

My old review reflected the sushi ignoramus that I was as I had been wont to imbibing rolls after rolls after rolls. I still cringe at that phase. Push forward to a more comprehensive, nigiri aware review today. One star for the happy hour. The prices cannot be beat. One star for the fact that this place is the nearest sushi place to our apartment, and the most convenient place to satisfy any sushi craving. One star for the sushi themselves. While not extraordinarily scrumptious (in comparison to other high scale sushi restaurants I've been to), the fish is - for the most part - fresh. I usually get salmon, yellowtail and uni. They hit my sushi craving spot and I have no complaints. One star for the service. While I do agree that they seem understaffed for the most part, sitting on the counter (i always prefer it and I choose to sit on the counter in a sushi place when I can) makes service easier. The sushi chef is friendly and remembers that I'm a regular. Definitely going to this place over and over again.

Surprisingly five stars for two reasons alone: ONO y UNI. Went twice in a week and both times wasn't let down. I expected less to be real witchu because 1. I love sushi 2. Frequent dope joints that usually cater to purely non-Sunset clientele, but, hell, Koda you surprised me and I jock you. On our third date let's go all the way! Arigato.

I'm really surprised by the negative reviews; I've always had a beyond stellar experience at Koda! The fish is super fresh, like, the salmon sashimi literally melts in your mouth. The Citron Sea is the most incredible sushi concoction I've ever had, with so many crazy flavors going on at once - it's tart, it's spicy, it's garlicky, it's sweet....it's amazing. The blue crab roll is legit, with thick chunks of crab and avocado...Mmm! I like the ambiance of this place too. It's quiet and usually not too crowded (I haven't been past 8:30pm, so maybe it gets hoppin' at night). There's a big screen that plays random movies and a few tables outside, if you want to enjoy beautiful Silver Lake weather and people watching. There's a small parking lot in the back, so if you come at an off-time, you can probably snag a spot. I'm excited to try the happy hour someday. Anyway, don't buy into the negative reviews; it seems that they all call out the service, anyway. I can live with slower service if the food's amazing, and it is.

Oysters on the half shell. Lobster roll. Shishito peppers. Sake. Salmon sashimi. Shrimp tempura roll. Great food. Iffy service tonight.

The Good: $5 dollar rolls from Noon to 7pm, seven days a week. When it's good. It's very good. The Crunchy roll is great. (Not on happy hour menu). The happy hour rolls are all good. The Bad: My first experience with Koda was so bad I would have never returned if it weren't friends who want to go. Second experience was great. Turns out It all depends on the Chef. Sometimes it great. Sometimes it's not worth the five bucks. Mostly I've had good experiences. Tiny parking lot. That is likely full and you will have to back your vehicle down the tiny entrance way onto sunset.

Dined here day before Thanksgiving 2014. The restaurant is located off of a strip mall on Sunset Blvd in the Silverlake area. Parking can be a pain! It took us 20 mins to find parking off one of the residential streets 1/2 block up. Once we got to the front of the restaurant there was a sign posted indicating parking located in the back lot of the restaurant! The streets are so dark and the driveway so narrow, it was nearly impossible to see that sign. It was evident, given there were hardly any cars parked back there. We were greeted with a kind lady who happened to also be our waitress. The restaurant itself was dark, with old furniture, one grand tv and one modern flat screen at the sushi bar area. We came strictly for Happy Hour sushi rolls and appetizers. Ordered the mushroom poppers, sea eel avocado rolls, California rolls, coconut shrimp croquettes, edamame, & shrimp tempura. Needless to say, despite the very old furniture, single wait staff, single sushi chef and humongous big screen playing a very odd version of planet of the apes, we were very pleased with the attentiveness of the waitress, and the food quality. The place got really crowded after 6p. So I suggest coming a tad earlier during happy hour. FOR THE FINALE, we came with a party of 3 and they charged an automatic 20% tip! The bill was $47 (tax-$56.40) they added 20% tip came to $67.68. Yea I was shocked too! I normally was going to tip between 15-18% as I normally do, but given we didn't ask for much let alone get drinks ie alcohol or fancy sushi etc they charged tip on our bill!!! I was shocked. I didn't argue, she was nice, but it was the principle.

This is our go-to sushi place. Their Citron Sea and Baja are to-die for--they are my favorites. All the others are also great. I wish I could eat their entire menu in one sitting. We always leave extremely satisfied and wanting more.

Wanted to love you. But fish was meh. If you like rolls with 8 ingredients etc you will probably fare fine. If you want a place that sticks to the classics and executes we'll keep looking

Best happy hour ever! Cheap and tasty rolls! $5 plum wine :) the tempura California roll is amazing. It's hot and crunch on the outside but a regular Cali roll on the inside. The mushroom, tofu, soup, salad- it's all good and all reasonable if ordered from the happy hour menu. And it's a long happy hour too!

    (4)
  • Crystal H.

If your a local and within walking distance, this place is great! The happy hour prices aren't bad, $5 for a cut roll, and wide selection. I like the nigiri and it tastes super fresh. Pair it with a shot of sake (or a whole large bottle) and you're in a state of relaxation. I like to sit outside and watch the world go by. Keep it simple my friends.

I would not come back...ever. The sushi was really small portions and the beers were warm. My boyfriend and I got two rolls and one 4 piece sashimi with two beers each to wash it down....the total came to almost 50 dollars...I'm shocked. This place was not worth it. The rolls looked like something served at a gas station, and I honestly mean that. I am not trying to get bad karma by writing this review I just want other Yelpers to know.

  • Cooki S.

Yea it's great they have happy hour! But seriously? You're going to run a restaurant with one overworked waitress who slowly brings the dishes out one at a time. By the time we got to our second dish, we no longer wanted the rest of our meal from having waited so long in between dishes. Parking is terrible! Don't bother attempting to park in the back lot. Not worth spending 20 minutes searching for parking in the area.

The sushi here is analogous to purchasing a stock Honda Accord from the dealership. Like sushi, an Accord is an overall solid purchase. But if you opt in for all the upgrades- fancy sound system, premium wheels, leather interior, etc. It becomes a spectacular purchase. There's no way to opt in for a spectacular purchase at Koda. The sushi comes stock- rice and fish wrapped in nori. And no 19" wheels here (the rolls are small). Atmosphere is what you'd expect in Silverlake, quaint with a bit of character. The waitress was a bit condescending and presumptuous: Me: Can I see the full menu so I can see what's in the rolls? Her: It says the same thing as the happy hour menu. The spicy tuna roll has spicy tuna. They're all self-explanatory really. Me: So the Philadelphia roll has a piece of Philadelphia in it? Her: Salmon. EVERYBODY knows that. Guess I'm not everybody. I still tipped over 20%, but I won't be returning to Koda again. If I'm going to eat a stock Honda Accord, I at least want a more pleasant seller.

One of my favorite places for sushi in the area. They have a great extended happy hour and both front & back patio seating so I can bring my canine companion. Last time I came the salmon sushi was insanely fresh & delicious!

After meeting up with old kindred at bar 4100, this place was the only restaurant open for a late-night nosh (it was 10pm, you guys! Closes at 11.) We ordered a bevy of sushi rolls, and I loved them all! Don't ask me to remember any of the names, as the one I ordered was just a California Roll. Very delicious! They were expertly wrapped so that it didn't fall apart on you after one bite, which I loved! I am quite the klutz, so small conveniences such as that make a big difference! The average roll/hand roll costs around $5/$6 with other rolls costing upwards of $13. They also have entree dishes like Chicken Katsu, and Teriyaki Chicken, which I was strongly contemplating. Yum! I will definitely be back if I'm ever in the area.

Decent place to get sushi if you live nearby or happen to be in the area. Not somewhere I would drive to. My salmon and yellowtail sushi was solid. Hot tea was flavorless and a tea bag, which is hard for me to get past since I eat Japanese food so much. Was expecting awesome green tea! They were out of shishito peppers - we replaced it with the edamame with garlic which was pretty good. Spicy tuna crunch and cosmic rolls were probably the best part. Would recommend those. The reason for the lower review rather than 4 stars is the service. The guy there didn't seem interested in doing his job at all, he rarely came around and made it seem like he was being inconvenienced. Other people eating there, even though it was pretty empty, were also looking to track him down. And our food came out super slowly and in a reallly odd order. Parking isn't too bad - they have a precariously narrow lot in the back which is nice since most places rely on street parking over there which can be tough.

Not amazing, not horrible. Beverages are always luke-warm and sushi rolls are mostly rice. If you have time, go somewhere else.

I'm in the parking lot after walking in and out of this dump. 11:45am. No sushi in the case yet sign says open. Owner or some homeless guy at the counter was rude when I asked if they were open. No love lost. Plenty of other options on sunset. Oh and there was a schitzo outside who was prob their valet.

Like ANY raw fish distributor you'll occasionally encounter salmon when it's not GREAT :-/ But overall I can enjoy myself at the sushi bar during Happy Hour. TV is always on MUTE with closed captions so the only noise pollution is a loud talker.

I love this place! I was introduced to it for the first time yesterday and the food was incredible. Parking in the back is easy and beats fighting for street parking and meters. The dynamite blue crab roll, miso soup, unagi and so much more were delicious, fresh and the sauces were so flavorful! This is a well-priced, nicely decorated, clean place - complete with celebrity sitings (Kristen Stewart and Macy Gray within 30 minutes). All the while staying casual, not loud and very friendly, attentive service. I highly recommend this place - my new favourite sushi place.

My gal and I went to try this out despite the low ratings on this site and others. It's very local to us so we thought we'd give it a try. There was one man (I was told later was the managing waiter) and the Sushi Chef. The Chef was really friendly and courteous but the waiter was hardly around and took forever to show up each time. There were only a few tables and he constantly disappeared or was hanging at the back of the bar. We ended up ordering half of our meal from the Chef and picked it up from the bar ourselves. At the end we went over to the man who appeared to be the owner and I stood next to him politely waiting for him to acknowledge me and he eventually looked up from his newspaper at me with a look of "what do you want". I explained my frustration with the service and he didn't care in the slightest.. was rude and in the end I felt that we'd spent $80 for practically self service and rudeness that was unwarranted. The food, by the way, was OK. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great. The Chef tried and I'll give him a lot of credit for that, I think he just didn't have the best materials to work with (i.e. the fish). I'll never go back to this place and I strongly recommend against it. I'll be sticking to well reviewed places from now on. Cheers

Service is terrible. Waited over an hour just to get our order taken and after they took the order it took them another hour just to bring half our food. They brought me water and my glass had lipstick on it. Asked for lemon for the new water they brought. Never got it. They said they were backed up but the fucking place was empty. He suggested their special, then came back 10 min later and said they were out of it. WTF? And everything had onions on it. I wish they had written that on the freaking menue. So after waisting one hour of our times in this place we left and went to get real sushi and service somewhere else.

As a wheat allergy sufferer, it has been increasingly hard for me to go out and have food prepared with care and consideration. The sushi chef here actually seemed kind of excited about making something different and and he was proud of his soy sauce-less and masago-less fun roll. It turned out to be quite delicious! Great prices and local to me make it a bonus....

Went for happy hour today - it was me, my 21 month old son, two other adults and their young baby. While we were eating the owner came up to me with a broom and dustpan and told me to SWEEP UP my son's mess. The mess was confined to under his chair which was next to mine - it wasn't in the isle and trust me - it was not that big of a mess. I have seen a mess, this was not it. He said he didn't have a janitor and that it wasn't his job to clean up. To which I replied, "it's not mine either and it's gotta be someone's". He was surprised and angry at me when I flat out refused his request and started a commotion. I said his request was unacceptable even after we were done eating but that it was gross and disgusting to ask me WHILE WE ARE STILL EATING! He asked me to please keep it down, "Does the whole restaurant need to hear this?" to which I replied, "absolutely yes." He then told me I was being rude and bitchy. I love that the dude comes up, starts a fight, then gets mad when I don't comply, calls me a bitch and THEN asks me to please keep it down to protect his reputation. It's super sad because it was a rare and perfect day: my son was on his absolute best behavior - happy, not wiggly, not screaming. He sat and colored by himself for 20 minutes!! 20 minutes! Come on. The stars had aligned for us to all have a pleasant, stress-free dinner. Adults enjoying adult talk, children happily and quietly playing. It was perfect - really perfect. We were all so blissfully happy... I would also like to say that I eat out with my kid a lot. I know how annoying it can be - it's annoying for me, too. And at the end of my meal, after the check is paid and a huge "thanks for putting up with this" tip is added, I often hand my son to my husband, get on my hands and knees and clean up as much as possible. Every restaurant - every single one - that see me do this tells me to get up and not to worry about it. They clean up messes every day, they say, and we all leave happy and I come back and spend lots of money again and leave big tips. We are all happy. Look, I understand not every restaurant is kid friendly. There were five other families with children under four in the restaurant while I was there, so I can safely call this a "child friendly" restaurant. I'm no jerk - I don't go to nice places and bring my crazy kid. No one likes that. You think I like bringing a crabby kid to a nice restaurant so I can spend a bunch of money to chase around a mini maniac AND I don't get to enjoy my meal? No. You know what I like? Babysitters. This isn't a place I would spend babysitter money on - I doubt anyone would. This is a "it's Monday and I don't want to make dinner" sort of places. No reasonable parent would ever say, "let's spend $15 an hour for a babysitter so we can eat Sushi at Koda." That has never happened. Not ever. Please save yourself some mediocre sushi and boycott this place on behalf of parents everywhere. And also because the owner is a total creep ball and thinks it's ok to harass paying customers. Oh yeah - happy hour for three adults, one of which doesn't eat seafood (read: cheap sushi), and a hungry toddler came to a incredible value at $96 pre-tip.

** edit .. it seems that this place has a bad reputation for its manager and how he treats his employees (look at the extraordinary number of 1-2 stars) ... don't support it! ** ------------------ 2 stars is overly generous, but I'm giving them the extra one star because the food tasted decent and one of the staff members tried to make amends. FOOD: The three of us had a simple order - sashimi (tuna) platter, sushi platter, crab tempura, and blue crab avocado roll. We got an extra pepper appetizer for free. If I didn't care about cut, quality, and price... this would've been okay. When we got our food, the first thing my husband noticed was how sloppy the cuts were. But again, the fish tasted okay. EVERYTHING ELSE: The weariness and discontent of the staff was written all over the members of the staff. That attitude was reflected in the service and food. I felt bad for them. The owner of the place was there, and I thought we were on Candid Camera because he seemed drunk and walked back and forth asking people to arm wrestle him. WOW, really?? This is a sushi joint, not a bar! Here's a laundry list of "violations" I noticed: A few customers left because the wait was so long, the staff were fighting amongst each other and pointing at customers (awkward...), one of the chef was smoking in the kitchen, the fish was not fresh and the stock seemed low, some people completely making out in the restaurant (just a little awkward if you're trying to be a classy place) and everyone just looked like they were ready to give up (apparently, their main chef was not there that night). Dinner ended (1.5 hrs later...). Thankfully, it was free (friend had a $40 groupon)... we left a generous tip...hoping it'd change things... maybe. I really did feel bad for our waiter, he seemed so frustrated.

One star for quality, one for the girl server. This was my experience: Ordered Maguro Nigiri Sushi, "nope all out"; ordered Ono white, "nope all out". Ordered Salmon, "Nope all out". OK I'M IN A I LOVE LUCY SKIT, see Episode "First Stop". So what do you have? From there onward decent experience. My god man order some raw fish already. Costco?

Came in for a late Saturday night dinner and the place was pretty empty. It's a small space with a HUGE TV. I ate tapas style--had the 3 mushrooms, miso eggplant, and fried oysters! Everything was delicious though the mushrooms were a bit salty. I really enjoyed the eggplant, they were perfectly cooked. I almost didn't get them because in Japanese it's nasu miso and the waiter just thought I meant miso soup :( In the end, he apologized, brought me the eggplant plus some seaweed salad at no charge! Fried oysters were crunchy and good. Just what I was craving! The owner was...interesting? He was hanging out at the bar watching movies on a laptop and listening in on our conversation. He was nice enough, but a bit odd. It's an ok restaurant, if I was in the area I may stop by again.

I went to Koda on Saturday alone, sat at the bar. The restaurant must have had 5 tables with clients (not too busy). I ordered the Cosmic roll. Well after 50 minutes sitting there starving staring at the sushi chef making other peoples orders I ordered a Yaki Tofu. Well wouldn't you know 5 minutes later my Cosmic is ready. Both were tasty but took way too long to receive my order. With three servers and the owner constantly on his desk top computer at the bar you think I could have been informed that there is going to be delay on receiving my order. For the amount of business this place receives another sushi chef should be added, because it should not take almost an hour to get your sushi. Service is too slow, not sure if I will return or recommend. Meh.

Tried this place a few years ago and the fish was not really up to par. Decided to give it another try and just left disgusted. The "Sushi chef" is a white dirty looking hipster with a huge chip in his shoulder. When I told him to check his attitude he argued with me. The owner came to the rescue and he is even more unkept and frightening than his "sushi chef". The fish is mushy and not fresh. The cuts are amateur at best. The bar area was cluttered and dirty. Stay away if you know your sushi or like customer service.

Terrible. Slowest service EVER! Small portions for the price. 45 minute wait for appetizers to come out?? Server did not even have the courtesy to apologize for the long wait. Never coming here again.

Definitely the worst sushi I've had. The first time I went there, it was below ok but I thought they were maybe having a bad night. Gave it a second chance and it was even worse. It was pretty busy for a Sunday night...our table was a mess, we had to clean it ourselves! EVERY single thing we ordered, we didn't get. Our order was completely messed up. We just decided to eat what we received. HORRIBLE! One thing we received had slices of lemon on top which made the sushi taste awful. There was only one guy making the sushi and one waiter. I'm actually surprised it's still in business.

Look for Chef Rex. Man's creativity will remind you why you love sushi in the first place. The appetizers are pretty good too. Get them Satsuma Fries. They have parking in the back. Just a heads up; I had to find street parking because I didn't know.

Top notch, super fresh fish. Beautiful presentation. Friendly service. Great happy hour specials. This place rules. My friend and I come here almost weekly...never had a bad experience. In fact, tried a few other sushi spots in different parts of L.A. since I've eaten here, and always end up wishing I'd just gone to KODA. Two thumbs up.

This place is really rude to parents with young children. NOT kid friendly! And the food is only mediocre at best. I will not be going back.

Disappointing doesn't scratch the surface. Walking in, we immediately loved the aesthetic; great lighting, chill music, cool urban vibe, Faster Pussycat Kill Kill playing silently on the screen against the back wall. Totally hip and cool... loved it. Had a weird moment when an older gentleman sitting at the end of the bar, watching David Bowie videos on a laptop and wearing earbud headphones gesticulated to us, at the front door, to take and seat. My dining companion and I exchanged a look... raised eyebrows... is this some new type of etiquette we weren't aware of? We didn't expect red carpet and rosebud petals thrown at our feet... but perhaps getting out of one's chair and using words to greet customers? Maybe? But hey, what do we know... oh, wait, I grew up and spent 20 years on the premises of my parents' restaurant and my date worked in one in Manhattan. Yeah, guess we DO know something. That was just weird. We were seated and greeted promptly by a very cute server. She had a big smile, appropriate demeanor, and just did a bang-up job. She was the reason we're going with two stars not one. We ordered our food and waited. And waited. Then waited a bit longer. As we were waiting, we saw the three men seated at the sushi bar get round one, round two, and round three of their orders. 40 minutes passes. There are five tables in the restaurant, hardly swamped. We realize that we ordered sushi but also a katsu... so both the sushi chef AND the kitchen were coming up on 45 minutes without producing anything. Our waitress was apologetic and comped us a cheap bottle of sake. It placated us for a short time. Finally, as minute 50 was just around the bend, our food arrived. It was a notch below mediocre. The miso soup was just above room temperature. The gyoza either were or simply tasted as though they were frozen, from a grocery store, and they were deep-fried not pan-fried, suggesting that they weren't fresh enough to present proudly on their own merit. They were supposedly mixed chicken and vegetable, and perhaps it says something that we weren't certain which was which. Yeah, that mushy. The sushi was so-so. Not awful, not special. I've had much fresher, for certain, but I didn't mind it. The katsu, on the other hand, was a flop. The chicken was tough and flavorless, and the tempura a bit bland. My dining companion was hating on the rice too, saying it's very cheap and wasn't properly prepared. I didn't notice that (but I'm not a connoisseur) but for sure, we felt that nothing really impressed. So... one star for the aesthetic, one for the great server. The three that were 'docked' from the possible five? Food quality/taste, speed, and customer service (seriously, the owner not being bothered to get up off of his chair or take out his earbuds was a bit schizotypal and rude). Perhaps this says it all... we hit a McDonalds drive-thru on the way home. Yes, really.

Service slow. The restaurant was empty and even like that they manage to give the slower service ever. Don't come if you are in a hurry or if you are starving! Also the rolls are tiny and mine had the smallest pieces of avocado.

  • Claudia C.

Good happy hour prices! Fish size in the rolls is nice and big, with a small portion of rice! :D Service is a bit slow, but sushi is meant to be eaten slow, right?

  • Michael P.

Service: bad (slow and didn't care); Tuna: excellent; Blue crab: should have been thrown out icky; Portion/Roll size: very inconsistent but mostly small. Seriously, some rolls were *almost* normal size and other rolls were about index finger width. Usually 4 pieces of fish, a roll, and salad are plenty to fill me up, but the rolls were so dinky I had to get another 2 rolls. So, beware the "happy hour" menu bc they will still get you. I guess I'd rather pay a dollar or two more and get normal sized rolls. Two stars are based solely on the terrific tuna and vintage boobie movie playing on the wall. Very Silverlake experience... servers who don't care, overpriced food, small portions, retro movie projected on the wall... it works for the area.

I moved to the area last year - when i saw this place really close by, I asked my friends who have lived in the area for years about "koda" & they all said "eh" not so good ... But one night me & my husband decided we didn't want to go too far from home- so we decided to give Koda a try...maybe its "ok"... Well... Let me just say the 1 star is for the only good thing we had - & that was the "rice cake appetizer w/ spicy tuna" other than that - be prepared for: Slow ass service - warm sushi (gross) - we also ordered the cajun roll which was totally over seasoned! & so was the calamari, both were just too salty. It tasted like it was covered in "shake & bake" I would not recommend this place - I don't think I would go back - next time I want sushi I'll make the short drive to Little Tokyo...(Zip, Hama, Komasa, etc.) or I'll make the drive to the Valley/Northridge & go to Yanagi's on Corbin, one of my all time favorite sushi places.

PROS: Good happy hour, fun ambience, good food, sushi chefs are really nice (deal with them!), a few stellar rolls (the Cajun roll is my new favorite!!!), weird projected movies always offer something to talk about. CONS: You are GUARANTEED to experience at least one of the following- 1. Slow service 2. Food comes in strange order/out of order. 3. Something about your order is incorrect or missing. 4. Prices increasing... (Please note- I have never had a rude waiter! Just...inattentive ones.) Overall, I like this place, and the sushi is good. Only once have I had something that didn't taste quite so fresh. The sushi chefs are really nice and I try to order with them as much as possible because the wait staff isn't the most attentive, and I've gotten into the habit of just getting up and asking for my check instead of waiting for 15 minutes after my plates are finished for someone to notice. Basically, don't come here if you're in a rush, and just know what to expect (ie something from above will probably be wrong) so you're not upset and you can just laugh about it and work around it. I do wish they would get their service together though! They seem to be raising their prices though and with just GOOD food and mediocre service, it's unmerited. I would love to recommend this place to more people...but I just can't rave about it.

Sushi didn't make an impression (am not a connoisseur by any standards), the beer was warm, and the service exceptionally inattentive (took good 20 mins to get attention and ask for a drink and the food ordering was confusing and took a long time; the food arrived with no utensils/spoons, etc).

I came here for happy hour (which takes place from 12pm-7pm) and it was a good deal for the price. There was a large happy hour menu where select rolls, appetizers, and salads cost $5 each. The portions were a good size and the fish was decent quality. We got the Philly roll, blue crab roll, and yellowtail roll. Also, important to note is that beers are $4! The sushi chef and waitress were nice and friendly. Next time I'll have the try the spicy tuna on crispy rice and raw oysters on the half shell!

Horrible never ever again.. My husband and I were hungry for sushi and decided to try koda for 1 st time I should have researched ! We sat by the bar and after we ordered I noticed there were flies everywhere literally everywhere on the cucumber, on the sauce , on the rice pot, on the board where the dirty chef distracted by tv cuts the sushi so gross! I wanted to leave right there but my husband is That kind of good guy We didn't know what to do I only had miso soup and cooked eel luckily we didn't order anything with that contaminated cucumber!. Then when we paid he let the waitress know about it and she replied oh yeah we'll clean it up ! Waaah waah gross! Never again

I usually walk by this place when I work out , and i saw their $4 happy hour menu lists and wanted to try it out. so, today Around 1:30 this place , and it was EMPTY! There was only One sushi chef at the bar and no one was there. anyways, we sat down and were served very quickly. I ordered the items only from the $4 happy hour menu. we got: SPICY TUNA ROLL(which is the one someone said it tasted bland and had no taste) SPICY SCALLOP ROLL CRISPY RICE WITH SPICY TUNA($3 ADDED FOR SP TUNA) MUSHROOM WITH SPICY TUNA SHISHITO PEPPERS SWEET POTATO FRIES Green tea($2.50?.. no where charges more than $2, and i didn't get refill) spicy tuna was spicy enough and actually tasted fresh. scallop? i used to eat scallop sashimi two times a week before, so i know how fresh scallop should taste like. Koda's scallop was definitely not fresh. shishito peppers and fries, which you can easily make at home, were so-so. they gave us green tea ice cream on the house with strawberries. I liked how they present the food in white plates. natural and earthy interior (especially wooden table and chairs with cushion) I'll definitely be back to check out other food.

Food- pretty good, we liked everything just fine. Entertainment- how do you beat Walking with Dinosaurs being projected on the big screen? You can try by bringing in a couple guitar players who do jazz renditions of Kid Rock and Disney songs.. We could not stop laughing. Creep owner- I meeeaaan, I only went to the bathroom to blow my nose so I didn't lock the door, but I'm sure it bummed that perv out bad when he barged in within 7 seconds... It's one open bathroom, and he was sitting at the bar and SAW me walk in there, so it was definitely no accident.

This place is great - DURING THE DAY. never been at night but before 4, you can get everything at a cheap and reasonable price. the owner is a bit strange but sitting out side and watching people go by is great. Parking in back makes it even better. love the veggie crunch roll, the tempura roll, the sashito peppers and the spicy tuna rice cakes.

I really like this place! The sashimi is so fresh and melts in your mouth...really. Customer service was great and sushi Chef Joe was very attentive, fun, and engaging. After sashimi, deep fried rolls, edamame, miso soup, and mochi ice cream and fruits we were stuffed and satisfied. Prices were awesome considering the quality and freshness of fish. I have to come again! Just be careful about parking because I received a ticket for parking across the street under "2-hour parking" when I did not park past 2 hours!

What do you get when you mix extremely AWFUL service with an excruciatingly long, 2-hour wait only to receive less than half your order of average sushi? One BIG fat mistake, that's what. NO STARS! I had to give one star so I can post this WARNING TO ALL who know BETTER! Need more? Well, here's how the night went: Hungry Group to Waitress after 30-minutes, "Miss, what's the status on our order?" Rolling her eyes. Waitress looks to the ONE sushi chef @ the bar as he rolls his eyes in return and walks away. 5 minutes later Waitress returns to tell my friend who ordered ONE roll To Go and PAID for it, "You don't have to wait. You can leave." DISGRUNTLED Group tells Waitress, "We've waited this long..." Waitress walks away. 20-minutes later To Go order received and friend leaves. 20 additional minutes later 45% of the rest of the order received. FAMISHED Group eats what we can in utter disbelief. 10 minutes later, ONE friend does NOT receive any of his order at all. Another friend only received half. And EVERYONE had NOTHING to drink at this point, including lukewarm water. Pissed off and keeping my composure, I asked the ENTIRE Group to wait for me outside. Me to Waitress, "Get your manager." Manager looks like a confused busboy dressed in black. "You're the manager?" I ask. He doesn't look at me at all. "Well, if you're it then you should be ASHAMED and DISGUSTED at yourself, your staff and this place." He continues to look down. Manager to Waitress, "Didn't you tell them about the wait?" Waitress to Manager (still no one is looking at me), "Um...yes I did. I said..." (I cut her off). Me to Waitress, "You need to get out of my face." She quickly walks away. Manager finally looks at me, "Well you guys looked like you were having fun so I didn't want to interrupt you so..." Wtf... Me to Manager, "Are you serious?! No, we were killing time! You know, forget it. We're walking out because it was HORRIBLE." Knowing that he won't do anything about it, I turned to the other very hungry patrons around me. Me to Patrons, "You've been waiting long too? Well, you'll be waiting for a while. So if you want to eat some time tonight, find a new place." 3 tables walked out. SHOCKED, Group waited outside to see if ignorant Manager, ditsy Waitress or grumpy sushi-maker (forget Chef!) would come out at all. They never did. They knew better then to ask ANYONE to compensate them for an utter and complete waste of time.

So...... Let me start by saying, the Sushi is great! Its the slow service, lack of attention and over all feeling of 'you're lucky I brought you your water' vibe. Was so sad, wanted it to be my go too local sushi spot, but will not be going back.

I never review restaurants, but the owner creeped me out so much that I just had to speak my mind. He gave me a creepy cross charm so I could "remember him" and tried to explain to my friend and I how "well endowed" he is in the groin region. To prove that he may be small and old but he's still tough, he punched himself in the face HARD with his ring hand. Explains why he had a fat lip. It's like it was a nonstop eHarmony video because he just wouldn't stop telling us TMI about himself. We never even saw the bill because he kept saying he didn't want our money, he just wanted a kiss. We said NOTHING to provoke this! We barely spoke. We just sat there in stunned silence. I left how much money I thought was appropriate on the table and we burst out of there. I will never go there again. No sushi is worth sexual harassment.

Food was yummy but very small portions. Go to Midori, so much better. Also, the owner showed my friend and I, his tattoos on his tits and showed us his cut marks on his tummy and discussed how he could do hari kari and would be successful at it. WTF?! His zipper was down, had a hole in his crotch of his pants ,and told us we didn't need to pay the bill if we gave him a kiss. He had a fat lip, black eye, and cuts on his arm and he told us he was just in a fight. So uncomfortable! NEVER AGAIN!

Stopped in for lunch on Saturday, sat outside. Service was great and prompt. Sashimi (salmon) was super buttery and fresh, and spicy tuna roll is great! Small enough to pop in your mouth and just the right amount of heat. Tiger wrap specialty roll is pretty good. Not my fave thing ever but that's just a taste issue, the cucumber wrapping is crispy and presentation is beautiful. Ordered wine and they brought a way hearty pour (bonus points!) and exactly when I finished waitress stopped by to ask if I'd like another. Really, really great lunch experience!

Don't bother going unless it's happy hour. I spent $10 total on a spicy tuna roll, spicy scallop roll, and miso soup. Arguably it should have been worth $7. There's a chance that spicy tuna is just raw cod colored pink. Who knows. But don't spend more then $10 here, it just isn't worth it. Plus the servers were WAY confused. Everytime they brought something out they had to look around for a solid two minutes, then back at the dish, then around at the crowd, til they could figure out where the plate went. This isn't the place you want to go if you need a quick sushi fix.

I dont even know where to start when it comes to KODA. Im not a big yelper but the last time i came here was so disappointing. So I kinda had a feeling the owner here was a creep since i always noticed they were hiring...seemed like every 2 months they needed someone....anyways the first handful of times I came the service wasnt horrible and neither was the sushi so for a fast TO-GO meal it was worth it. Then i came by and had the worst service i ever received. I typically like to be generous with tip but i actually had to go out of my way to ask for place settings...wait 10 minutes to tag someone down for drink refills, check, etc. So i wrote i refused to tip for a service i didnt receive. Then last saturday (day before mothers day) i went in to get a quick spicy tuna roll. The place was empty so i wasnt really sure why it was taking so long to get water & never got soy beans like most sushi places give you. THEN it got really interesting when the OWNER barged in yelling how he wasnt going to pay his staff saying "he sees whats going on here & doesnt like it" the sushi chef and waitress just said okay and nodded. The owner then went to the kitchen where i could here him yelling some more. He eventually walked out to the front and proceeded to scream...not YELL..SCREAM at the sushi chef calling him a "son of a bitch" "worthless piece of shit" and so on. I was so offended i asked for the check and debated wether or not i should place a call to LAPD Oh and the owner also had a HUGE DISGUSTING SCAB on his forehead which i assumed was from another drunkin night. why cant people just protest this owner by not coming here anymore? And do these former employees & current employees not realize legal action can be taken against the owner? Ive never seen anything like it. NEVER COMING AGAIN i dont care how bad im craving sushi.

Koda is pretty good! I've been here twice for their mid day happy hour and it's the cheapest sushi in Silverlake. I do have buddies of mine that say they've gotten sick but I think it's good, reasonable & delish!

This is my favorite sushi spot in Silver Lake; the service is excellent, the food fresh and on point. Saporro on draft always hits the spot. Kathleen is a sweetheart. Koda is the jam.

Koda is my favorite sushi spot in Silverlake. The quality of their fish is excellent!! Whenever I have a friend in town this is the spot I take them too. Bring your friends and come get the Nasu Miso, Hijiki seaweed salad and the salmon anything!! Nom Nom!

Obviously there are better spots for absolutely incredible sushi not so far away, but the food is solid and happy hour is definitely worthwhile. The ambience is laid back and it's actually a preferable option for watching the game than the overpriced and hectic Good next door. Side note when choosing where to sit: there is a large screen on the back wall often projecting avant-garde films, which can be very distracting. Definitely helpful to know there is a parking lot in back and seating outside.

    (3)
  • Sophia P.

Not sure why this place is only 3 stars. The staff is nice, the fish is really good, and the atmosphere is awesome. My only complaint is that their beverage refrigerator could stand to be colder.

  • Christine C.

Is it just me or is the sushi getting better? We come here pretty often, we live up the street. I used to come here just because it was close, good and always had seating. However, today I believe this is a five star place! Where can you go for sushi happy hour that is actual fresh fish!? Not just crappy crab rolls that taste like mayo, I mean melt-in-your-mouth spanish mackerel, tuna and salmon. Really incredible. The sushi chef was filleting fish right in front of us. Plus, love the owner. He's the sweet man in a trench coat who sits at the computer on the bar. Really loving this place. Suggest the Jakarta roll.

  • Aysia N.

I enjoy this place very much usually during happy hour, for obvious reasons. The food is good and I like the ambiance. I've come here on bad days but being the person that I am, I gave it a chance. I noticed they've cleaned up their act by hiring more attentive servers and quick sushi chefs. Definitely stop by if you are in the area!

  • Thadeus B.

Good but not amazing. There seems to be only one waitress and she doesn't seem to be too happy about it. Service is slow and at times it seems like you have to be extra nice to ask for anything out of fear of disappointing the server. Had one roll that really stood out and was terrific, Citron Sea or something like that. If you end up here, definitely order it. Everything else is just ehhh, ok.

    (3)
  • Azul D.

I have always been a fan and have been coming here for years! The shisito peppers are my favorite anywhere in the city, tons of umami flavor! Four rolls is all you will need for two people, friendly service, parking in the back and never disappointing. One star off for lack of good music.

(Dined 11/12/12 M @ 2:30pm): A successfully filling bento lunch meal was the coda for the afternoon! On this lovely brisk post-Veterans Day, my friend and her friend planned to try one of the few sushi places in Silver Lake, Koda Sushi & Sake, which was conveniently in walking distance from my pad. As the adventure continued to try all of the eateries in the neighborhood, it was a wonder why it took so long to finally eat here. After all, I love sushi! The place was empty save for the one gentleman at the sushi bar, the sushi chef, and the female hostess/waitress. My friend and I always saw the bento box lunch special outdoor sign, so this was the perfect opportunity (I also recalled seeing the happy hour sign of 12-7 everyday!). We were greeted immediately and sat at any table of our choice. We already knew what we wanted but we still had to flip through the menu. I spied a couple special rolls listed on the chalkboard behind the sushi bar which caught my eye. Once our waitress returned after she gave us a few minutes to decide, we each ordered the bento box lunch ($10.00 ea.), which included a cup of miso soup, a choice of California or spicy tuna roll, a choice of chicken or beef teriyaki served over a bed of steamed white rice, seaweed salad, vegetable tempura, and a cucumber salad. The Saigon roll ($10.00), which consisted of shrimp, crushed peanuts and peanut sauce, cucumber, mint, and cilantro, ultimately caught my eye. For drinks, a pot of green tea for me ($3.00) and a canned Diet Coke for my friend ($2.50). Finally, an order of green tea ice cream for dessert ($4.00). Our drinks came out quickly, shortly followed by the Saigon roll (8 pieces). What caught my attention about this roll was the inclusion of mint, cilantro, and peanuts - all firsts for me in a roll. The peanut sauce was initially overbearing, but the mixture of the mint and cilantro as I continued to chew turned into a lovely Mexican/Asian dance of flavors. I loved adding cilantro to everything and yes, it went well with sushi! The miso soup came out next, and I nearly dropped it 'cause it was hot! After it cooled down a bit, it soothed my soul with the many bits of tofu and floating green onion. Mmm...mmm...good. Finally, the bento began! It came out in a Swanson's TV dinner-like tray with all of the separate sections. At first glance, it was a lot of food. The steam that arose from the chicken teriyaki, rice, and tempura signaled the freshness. Our respective rolls were of good size, came with 6 pieces, and again were fresh (I watched them being made from our table). We were surprised by the amount of tempura we got - a good 6-7 pieces! As we dove into our food, everything tasted so good (and did I mentioned it was all fresh!?)...but we also starved ourselves for this lunch. Outside of the Saigon roll, there truly wasn't anything special to write home about our bento food. Freshness, a lot of food, and we walked out full was the story here. The green tea ice cream came out in a dish that housed 3 decent-sized scoops. Doubt they made the ice cream, but it tasted fresh, too! The service was very good, but it may also have to do that we were virtually the only ones in the restaurant. Eventually, as we were close to leaving, a small party arrived. Our waitress was very attentive, checked on us regularly, filled our water glasses, and diligent about clearing our table. Parking was mostly of the metered street variety along Sunset Blvd. However, there were some side streets and we walked. If there was a parking lot, I didn't see one. Overall, Koda Sushi & Sake was a pleasant lunch experience, especially when you have the entire place to yourself. I found very good value based on the prices and service I noted above (total bill was around $54.00 before tip), but the portions were big so more bang for your buck! The atmosphere was very warm with ample open dining area inside marked with many wooden tables and chairs, a sushi bar area with a flatscreen TV, and outdoor seating for warmer weather. If you asked me, I say they have enough space to put in an actual bar towards the back. The attire was casual so on a warmer day, expect me to be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. And they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX!

This place is totally... awesome! I love how the appetizers are so flavorful. Spicy tuna Crispy rice is the best! & they have quality sushi. :) I love how they have wine for $5.00 by glass in a hipster side of town in silverlake, los angeles. Ambiance is cool. Perfect for a casual date night and awesome sushi!

I didn't realize there were so many bad reviews for this place until after my husband and I ate here. We stopped in when it was quiet, 3:30pm on a Sunday afternoon. Service was good and the waitress was nice. We ordered oysters and nigiri: Hama Hama , Kumamoto, sake, hirame, unagi, Ikura, and hamachi. Everything was fresh and delicious.

Koda Sushi is definitely average when it comes to sushi. I went a couple of weeks ago and ordered 4 different rolls. They all tasted good but they were nothing memorable. Prices were pretty moderate and the service was good. The biggest upside to this place is that it closes at 11:00PM. Most restaurants around the area close at either 9:30 or 10, so beggars can't be choosers. This place is OK by my book and I'd definitely try it out again.

Two thumbs down! The back patio was not seatable....dirty tables, dusty seats, next to motorcycles and cars. Badly maintained without touches of care or style. We then went inside and were served by a waitress who took care of the guests by herself, so needless to say, things fell through the cracks and took time. The apetizers came last, the main entrees came first and we had to ask for sides twice. They also ran out of sparkling water. And the lights dimmed up and down randomly. The sushi was ok, and the prices good, but the entire experience was very disappointing. Too bad.

Edit - I constantly get the avocado rolls & blue crab rolls for lunch, since I work around the corner. Still a little slow on service at times, but food is good. Have yet to dine in again. Cosmic roll is always good for me. However I went recently, and the service was pretty awful. I told the waiter I'd like to sit outside, and when it looked like he wasn't going to take me there I found my own seat. Sat there for about 5 minutes with no service. Went back inside to ask about seeing a menu to which I was handed a "to-go" menu. I asked if sitting outside meant I had to order at the counter, and the waiter said "yeah, that'd probably be best for you." Best for me? How about a waiter who does his job? I'll continue to get their food, but I won't be going back to dine in.

Best happy hour ever. $4 rolls, beers, apps. The fried tofu app is the best thing I've ever had. The rolls are all solid and the happy hour spans from something ridiculous, like 12-7 if I remember correct. The ambiance is classy and hip.

Koda is my neighborhood sushi restaurant, and I eat here at least twice a month. The sushi is always fresh, and the presentation is perfect. I love the rice they use. There's only one catch- the service can be slow. It's a small restaurant, and when it fills up it can take a little while to get your food. My husband and I know this, and are still repeat customers. It's that good.

We have ordered here several times for take-out and EVERY SINGLE TIME our order is late/delayed. They are nice enough to apologize a lot and offer a free drink after waiting an hour to pick it up and then another 15-20 min for it to be ready is just too much. They obviously place a very low priority on their take-out orders and they always say "we're short staffed".. every time. The last time I even called after an hour to ask if it was ready before I walked there, I was told that they needed another 15 minutes, so I waited.. and when I arrived it STILL wasn't ready. The sushi is decent, not amazing and the prices are good but we just can't take the poor service any longer. No more Koda for us.

Fast service and $4 sapporos on tap. It's a great happy hour and it starts early (12) it's different from the rest of the spots around and if you're on a budget want sushi and a beer at an affordable price, then this is the spot.

Just went here for my 4th time the other night and I have to say the sushi quality seems to get better every time I come! When I walked in I was quickly greeted by the host who told me I could sit anywhere I like. He was very attentive to my needs and I didn't even have to ask for a refill on my water, he was there ready to pour as soon as I was done. The sushi chef was a sweet man and I enjoyed watching him come up with fabulous creations at the sushi bar. I ordered the rice cakes to start which are to die for. A MUST to order if you come here, they are the best I've ever had. I ordered a spicy tuna cut roll, which the chef accidentally made into a regular hand roll. It looked good so before he fixed his mistake I told him I would just try it, and I'm so glad I did. It was some of the best spicy tuna I've ever had and just typing this now is making me crave it! I also ordered the crunch roll (maybe it was called crunchy?), which was also fantastic. This place is clean, the waiters are fast, the sushi chef is friendly and the food is wonderful. What more could you ask for?

I was the only customer here and service was great. I left super happy. It wasn't the best sushi but definitely at least 3.5 stars for sushi. The salmon tasted good but I wish it had more fat. They had Ono which I've heard is not common. The rice could be better. Maybe I missed the sweetness as I ate. 5 stars for effort and attentiveness.

Okay I'm pretty sad it has come to this and me having to leave one star. When I moved to Silver Lake about 4 years ago this was my go to place for sushi and I loved it so much. The service was good and the food was good. I moved away to SF for two years and come back and the place has completely flipped. In not sure if they have new owners or what but the sushi taste like something you'd buy from a deli at a grocery store and the service is just as bad. I've gone back here 3 times since I moved back to LA from SF just thinking maybe they had off nights but nope this place has definitely gone down hill, very sad. Plus the last two times I went I had to race home and spent my evenings on the toilet :/

My boyfriend and I have become a regular here. I live down the street and whenever I get a craving for sushi and a great happy hour Koda is a stone's throw away. The blue crab roll and stuffed mushrooms are definitely a must try. The whole menu is full of flavor and surprise. $4 beers and $5 rolls.. Great service and it's local!.. How can that be beat? Another great hole in the wall/silverlake gem.

$10 for a carafe of house sake (about 7 shots) solidly priced sushi (definitely no rip-off prices) great ambience (except for that weird video playing on the wall that just shows various nature/industrial shots, what?) $4 for mochi I will definitely be returning.

I've been coming here because I live right around the area. I'm not a big fan of sushi, but get their teriyaki chicken here often. My friends that I come with me say their sushi is great and the happy hour prices are even better. We usually come here for lunch and the servers here are nice and the service is good. I'm usually served by a girl that said her name was Hannah. She's always friendly and is good about checking up on us. I would recommend this place to people around the area.

The food is good and the prices are very reasonable. The reason I give it a 3 star is because the service is poor. The waiters take forever to assist you. When they finally take your order and bring out the appetizers, they don't give you the dishes needed. I had to get up and grab it myself. They need to trained their waiter/waitresses in customer service.

The other day was my birthday and a friend wanted to take me out to dinner. We ended up going here strictly because it was down the street from the bar we were meeting everyone else at in 2 hours and I'd been here before with decent experiences. Well, needless to say NEVER again. First and foremost, the waitress was awkward and rude to us. Not that I expect anything from anyone for my birthday - especially strangers - but my friend mentioned it to oust me and this girl didn't even say happy birthday. My friend was sick and he asked her what soup was the spiciest and she just said "I don't know". To top this we ordered sake and tea to which we were brought the wrong tea and only one sake glass. After this we sat here for an hour or so and not even the soup had come nor had our water glasses been refilled. We went in to see what was taking so long and it ended up people had been there longer than us waiting and a line of complaints had formed. We just asked in a nice way if she could wrap ours to go and she said it'd still be a while. She came out about 15 minutes later and we said we just had to go so she said she'd go get the manager but the manager never came. Another 10 minutes later she comes back and says the tea and sake's on them then basically runs away. I highly recommend you don't go here. Basically any other sushi place is better.

My regular neighborhood sushi spot. I'm a spicy tuna crispy rice fanatic, and I like theirs a LOT -- it's my favorite in LA so far. The happy hour deals are good too - all nigiri sushi is $4 (for 2 pcs) and the fish is great quality, practically melts in your mouth. Sometimes they have a hawaiian poke hand roll special for $7 which is delicious. Next time we go back, we're going to try to oyster shooters. Great place, make friends with Chef Joe (he gave us a free taste of yellowtail with garlic ponzu sauce - it was awesome!), always a reliable place for a good sushi meal. They have parking in the back, so look for the sign!

I would give this place a zero star rating if I could! Service was awful and the food was not good. How is this place open? One of the waiters or hosts was busy watching Black Hawk Down (right at the bar/main table?) and not even helping me when I arrived to pick up food. I would steer clear of this place.

My bf and I just moved to the area and as a general note honestly Silverlake needs to step it up. It's got so much potential and so many supposedly creative people that it's been annoying to encounter so many mediocre over-priced restaurants. I expected more interesting experimental concepts with cool/ fun atmosphere and creative food- more like the arts district in LA. Well it's not quite like that but there's a couple gems, unfortunately Koda isn't one of them. FOOD: Sushi is ok. It's not the best sushi I've ever had in my life but it's decent. I like the half-shell oysters and they're for a good price. Happy hour is a good time to go bc the prices are excellent (5$ rolls), wouldn't go any other time frankly cuz it wouldn't be worth it. SERVICE: I've only ever been here for happy hour, it's a bit slow bc there is only one sushi chef and usually one waitress... there aren't too many customers at that time though so its ok. I've never had to walk out, but I can see how it could easily get backed up if it were even just a bit busier. Which would explain some of the other reviews. SUSHI CHEF- man I wanna like you, but you've clearly got a chip on your shoulder and act like douche. This whole mellow "don't give a f***" attitude is so outdated and lame, take some pride in what you do. Anytime anyone asks you about the food or about how you got into cooking you act like it's a dumb question. But fine I get it, your busy and making friends isn't your job. I could agree with you on that if you could at least answer the basic questions about the ingredients politely. I mean that IS your job, and to give answers like "I don't know", "I don't care", "Never googled it" is just surprising. I mean I literally know people that are more into sushi than you are, and that's depressing considering you work in a restaurant in such a prime location. But I'll credit that your creepy manager is probably an asshole and that's why you have such a bad attitude. SERVERS- I've had two different waitresses and the service and attitude from them was about the same. They're sweet but they don't know much about the menu items, like at all. Or really about waitressing...there's just a general lack of assertiveness and air of apathy in this place that seems to affect everyone. MANAGEMENT: based on the reviews I can only assume the reasons behind the attitudes of the servers and sushi chef relate to how they are being treated by the manager. I saw him once, and honestly he seemed weird and unconcerned with the happenings of the restaurant. During a particularly eventful happy hour he just sat and stared at his computer as drama went down. When customers came in he regarded them almost with disdain, like a "god why don't you sit down already" kind of attitude. THE DRAMA: So the first time we went in there we sat at the bar and had our awkward moments when we tried to be friendly with the passive aggressive sushi chef. We didn't trip about his attitude, we just left him alone after realizing he clearly didn't feel like talking. The waitress and him clearly had some tension. He got a couple orders wrong and she would come over and try to correct him. He gave a half-hearted attempt at being professional and took the criticism. THEN she tried to help him, kind of...she kept reminding him what went in what rolls and then he kinda blew up on her. Relatively quietly but loud enough for everyone at the bar to hear. Sh** got real and our heads were whipping back and forth like a tennis match. Meanwhile the manager stares at his computer. That kind of petty BS would not fly in my restaurant, but this guy didn't seem to care. Anyways it made for a really awkward lunch, albeit a bit entertaining. As a closing note, you know my bf and I really try to get to know the people in our neighborhood. So many have the same sour attitude, pissed off that their primary customers are "entitled hipsters". Granted I can get where your coming from, but you have to appreciate that those hipsters are the only people driving your business and willing to pay these ridiculous prices for the BS you try to push here. And not to mention the irony of the pot calling the kettle black. I would love it if Silverlake across the board would get with the program and realize that acting like an ass with a superiority complex isn't cool.

The owner is a very interesting guy who sits at the corner of the sushi bar on a laptop wearing ear buds whenever he is not greeting people at the door. We came in this past Saturday and there were 5 other people here, including I think the guy was French? He was sitting at the other side of the sushi bar, we came in around 730 and the owner was talking to him here and there, to us it seemed at first it was business talk about selling the place or idk, but the owner was talking about the space and whatnot and telling the guy to think about something or another and come back. Anyways, this place's decor I do not remember that much, but they did add some inflated sea creatures that the French man ended up fidgeting with at the end of the night. Long story short about the French guy, he was there before we got there and there after we left, we suspect he was drunk cause he just kept ordering water, maybe he went to far with sake during happy hour or something, i dont know. We ordered spicy tuna on crispy rice which was soo good! We also ordered the Pacific, which was amazing, I mean sushi is a light food in general, but the Pacific felt ultra healthy and ultra light going down your throat. We also ordered the Koda roll which was very good as well. This place is good and not bad on your wallet, the usual for a sushi place. Next time I am in the area I will come by again!

I went here last night for the first, after years of passing it by on the street. As many are saying, the service was terrible. We ordered two appetizers and one beer. The beer was lukewarm, so that was no fun. My boyfriend's order of veggie tempura came out, and the first piece he bit into was the outside of an onion peel, deep fried. Unedible and a sloppy mistake. Then we waited for my order of ahi tuna to come out. Some other people sat down and were served their entire meal, while we waited for the other appetizer. I'm not difficult to please, either, but this was getting bad. I guess they forgot about my order. But they never said anything. When the ahi tuna finally came, it was served in a wine glass, which is a bit too 1990's for Silverlake 2012. At least it tasted ok. We waited for these nonexistent servers to bring us the bill, to say something, anything, but no. Decided to tally up the bill ourselves and leave, with no tip. I have never done that until this time. There were only two other small parties there, on a Saturday night. Now I see why.

The service here is horrendous. Like, it's not even funny. They need to hire more people asap. But two words: JAKARTA ROLL. Done. I was honestly sad that it was gone when I finished mine. Get it to go so that you don't have to deal with waiters/waitresses ignoring you.

Went for Living Social deal and was reminded that I really need to go back more often. Eggplant appetizer with white miso was exactly what I like. The rolls were imaginative and delicious. One of those experiences where you keep going "Mmmm, this is really good!" and then keep repeating that.

I am giving this place a 2 star for many reasons... 1) No greeting when we walked through the door. Not even a 'seat yourself." Not one employee even made eye contact with us! It wasn't like they were slammed, there was only 1 other table occupied in the whole place. 2) The restaurant is dirty! The way they prep the food made me a little uneasy. The sushi chef kept dipping his knife in some dirty DIRTY water to clean it and then would wipe it on a grimy towel to dry it. The food prep area was unclean and didn't get wiped down at all the whole time we sat at the sushi bar. On top of that our dining area hadn't been cleaned before we sat down so there were sushi remnants all over the place. No one ever offered to wipe the table down. Also, there was old food stuck to the bottom of our plates. 3) The rolls are pretty small considering the average price for a roll is $12!! These rolls are noticeably smaller than every other sushi restaurant I have ever been to. 4) Our food took FOREVER to come! The sushi chef was really nice, which is why I gave one out of 2 stars, but he is pretty slow. Also, the rolls are small and kind of sloppily made. Part of the appeal of sushi is the look of the food and this sushi didn't look very appealing. The taste was okay, which is how Koda earned the 2nd star I gave them, but it wasn't the best. One thing I did like about this place is the rolls are different than most sushi places I have been to. Kudos to them for being innovative, but they have a lot of work they need to do to make this place better.

If I can give this place zero stars, I would. I walked into this place yesterday evening while looking for a good place to have dinner down Sunset. We sat in around 9 and had our order placed at 945 (Its hard to imagine how busy this place was with only 4 other tables to wait for). With this being said, the waitress very nice and was really the only bright glimmer of hope to an otherwise crypt of a eatery. We then waited another hour just to get our food! The sushi did not taste fresh and the rice was hard and stale. During our 30 minute wait for the bill, we were entertained by some sloppy drunk hobo dancing by the bar (which ended up to be the owner). For a place where we were hoping to get a quick bite to eat, we ended up leaving at 11:30. The food that tasted like it was caught a week ago and a sloppy cracked out drunk of an owner put this place on to my never come back here black list!

Food was good. I had the chicken which oddly wasn't grilled. It was fine but certainly not what I expected. The shrimp tempura was great. Service was odd... took forever to get menus and while the waitress was very nice and not afraid of our rather large dog, she was really slow. Prices were decent, and they have a pretty big happy hour food menu. BF got 3-4 rolls... all I remember is the crispy salmon and the octopus. We'll be back, at least until we move...

Food was a bit expensive. I had 2 expired living social coupons. The server was nice enough to let me use the 2 expired coupons during the same visit. (Which was super awesome!) Rolls were quite tasty, but just a bit too expensive. Sake selection was limited. and they were out of some beers. There were only 4 tables in the restaurant while we were there. Sushi service was super slow. It took over 30 minutes to get our first rolls. and then we were bombarded one after another. Not spaced evenly between dishes. The appetizer mushroom dish was quite salty. Other than that our experience was under par for the price. I will definately need another coupon if I were to try this place again.

El Conq next door canceled happy hour so we walked out & decided to try Koda next door. Glad we did! No, this is not your who/ha spot or gourmet sushi place w/ bombastic new age atmosphere & people yelling like kamikazes. But what ya do get is decent real fresh sushi at reasonable prices. Ray & I went at happy hour (12p to 7p), ordered everything on the menu, 3 draft beers & mo-chi for dessert, $50. Blue crab role was excellent, spicy tuna rice cakes were fresh & chilled just right. Loved the fried Calamari, yum. Richard (owner) has videos playing of zoo folk taking care of baby bears, kept my attention. Overall, I just liked it a lot. No pretense, just hang out, relax, drink $4 draft beers & sushi away. It's an easy good local sushi spot. Give Koda a try. We did & loved it. 4.25 rating.

What a disappointment this place was... Not so clean, bad oysters, and tempura soft shel crabl is not a tempura. All in all worst sushi I ever had. Don't be fooled by good oyster prices. It's not worth it!

Went for a late lunch mid week and loved it! Prices were super affordable and there was no lack in quality. Happy Hour was sweet! L-O-V-E-D! Loved! This place. Great decor, wonderful staff, giant flat screen, good natural lighting. Good specials and affordable sushi- YUMMERS! (Super simple and lame to note- I really like that they brought a little tea pit looking thing with the soy sauce in it. Just seemed more classy and cute, every detail was well thought out and I noticed) Place clean and had cool seating inside and out. There was a sushi bar, they offered some really good beers. Rolls were amazing and tons of selection. Wasn't too crowded always a plus and just super chill. I got my grub on and can't wait to go back!

They have some interesting rolls that were very good, and the food quality and portion size was about what you'd find most places. The place was very quiet this night and we were seated and served right a way. I definitely want to check out the happy hour. Given the history of the place I was well aware of an attempt to clean up the image though I sensed a nervousness among the staff, either they are in fear of being displaced by closure or in fear of someones temper. Either way, every one was well mannered and said no more than was required. I gave this place a chance due to the online voucher promo's and wasnt totally disappointed. It will not be a "favorite" regular spot for me but i will go back again. The area is fun and parking is limited, but the parking issues are not the fault of Koda.

OK, maybe it's because everyone is hating, but this place is super friendly and goes out of their way to make you feel good now. The infamous owner who everyone talks about has always been super nice to me, and I really was hoping he'd go off on someone just for pure entertainment value. But instead, he just sat there at the bar, looking at his laptop. He even asked very nicely if he could change the channel to his own damn restaurant. The sushi is decent, the sushi chefs are young/hip, but also very knowledgeable. There's some great specialty rolls, and you can't beat the happy hour. And it's sorta nice that its not so crowded because of all the retards that are too scared to visit based on the yelp reviews. To those who don't like it, I say stay away. To those who are too scared to come based on negative overzealous yelp reviews, I too say stay away. I'm fine drinking my cheap fat tires and eating great sushi without you.

Went here with a living social voucher. It was an average deal for the price I paid but if I had paid full price, which was 90$, I would have been extremely disappointed. I am not a sushi-snob at all. The sushi-quality itself was average. I've had better and I've had worse. It is just ok. The portions, however, are the smallest portions I've ever had. The sushi itself was tiny and the rolls were tiny. Now there are some yelpers that have said that the portions were decent or even big so maybe it was because I had used a voucher that they cut my portions so small. I'm not sure but I will not return with or without a voucher. I left still feeling hungry after ordering so many dishes between just me and my husband. However, service was good. There was no wait (Saturday around 6:30PM). And no drunken owner harassing patrons.

  • Nick F.

I wanted to dine and ditch the first time, but Dennis R. wouldn't let me. Now this is a little extreme, but Koda is really not exceptional. The sushi always seems juuuuust a little on the off side and the happy hour is one of those deceptive "you're going to spend $20 anyway" kind of deals. The owner is really cool though and gave us a free pitcher the first time we went in, which ALMOST made up for the haphazard service we received. I gave it another chance and the place was dead during dinner time. Maybe for good reason?

  • Dora Y.

I USED to love Koda... but these days it's definitely gone plummeting down hill! The sushi is good, it doesn't blow my mind. The service? UNGODLY! I keep going there because of their $4 happy hour, but it's not worth it, I'd rather pay $20 a roll and know that I'll be served than spend $4 a roll and wait 2 hours before the order of 6 rolls would ever appear! (literally) In short, the service is horrendous, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I like. LA is full of awesome sushi, don't waste your time here.

cousins and I give this place a 1.5...but im being nice and rounding up to 2... :) ...After reading the reviews....I decided to give this place a try..but my cousins were like...ehhh...... :\ We luckily got metered parking right in front of the restaurant. We came during happy hour...and most of their stuff were $4... I came here expecting the crazy owner to give us a show..but unfortunately, all we got was sucky service and yucky sushi... :( We ordered: california tempura roll, spicy tuna, eel avocado and philly roll. The sushi was...not good...wasn't fresh at all! :\ It took literally over half an hour to get our food..and the restaurant was not even crowded (about a total of...10 customers). I'm the type of person who eats their sushi with spicy mayo and eel sauce...and o my....their mayo and eel sauce failed!!! :( I dont know how you can fail on the dips..but it was just..not good...the mayo was too thick and had a really funky taste..and the eel sauce was a lil bit watery... =/ oOo! and the waitress who brought us our drinks TOUCHED THE TIP OF THE STRAW that we put our mouth on with her bare dirty hands!!! :( AND, they got one of our orders wrong...the cali temp roll. instead of temp roll, they brought out the cali roll..but..they did fix it...just took another bazillion of years...it literally took us...maybe...1.5 hours to eat 4 rolls of sushi!!? RIDUNKALOus!!! There was only ONE waitress and one sushi chef. The place wasn't even busy, the sushi chef had to call the waitress to come and get our bill cuz she was taking forever! Bill came out to be like...$16 ish...totally not worth the drive and the $$. :( The sushi chef apologized for the wait and terrible service...so..that's why I rounded up to a two....

Just too expensive. I usually drive to Little Tokyo for sushi but my friend and I were craving it around 10pm and Koda was the only nearby option. We placed a pick-up order that included: 6 pieces of sashimi, 2 miso soups, shrimp tempura, caterpillar roll, spicy tuna roll, and agedashi tofu, and the bill came out to $85+! I looked at the prices again and noticed that every dish was about $1-2 more than I'm use to. Whoops. Also, when we opened our take-out boxes-- we got nigiri sushi rather than sashimi. The wait was also a bit long-- about 40 minutes. Next time I'll just make the drive to Hama.

Went there with a friend around 6pm. Wasn't too crowded. Service slow and everything lacked flavor (seriously): the soy sauce, wasabi, the fish and even the Kirin draft. Tuesdays are not sushi days, my usual is not open.

This is my favorite local sushi place. Despite the terrific ambiance its surprisingly affordable (for sushi). My favorite dish is the Chirashi (sashimi over sushi rice), I use Chirashi to gauge the ingredient quality and affordability of every Sushi Place I go it, and it is great here. Plus, Sake!

While strolling down Sunset this past Sunday I encountered this delightfully fresh and delicious Sushi restaurant. I was nearby at Sunset Triangle Park waiting for my friend to perform outside of Mornings Nights Cafe for an art/music festival, and decided to venture down Sunset until their happy hour menu parked outside the restaurant caught my eye. At first glance the restaurant is impeccably clean and serene...a perfect place for a Sunday late afternoon snack. The happy hour menu has 6 piece sushi rolls for just $5. A pretty good deal considering how much sushi rolls can sometimes go for. When my sushi rolls came to my table they were beautifully displayed and vibrant looking. From the first bite I knew I was in love. For one, the sushi was incredibly fresh, and prepared perfectly. After I finished, perfectly satisfied with my two rolls, eil avocado and salmon avocado, the Sushi chef came back with a special sashimi piece for me to try...albacore tuna. At first I was a little hesitant to try it because I'm not a huge fan of tuna, but I didn't want to be rude to the chef so I took the plunge and tried it. It was incredible. The tuna had a smoky quality to it and the perfect amount of salty bite as well...wonderful! I am thoroughly impressed with the sushi at this place and will DEFINITELY be going back for more!

Probably one of the worst sushi places in LA. I went here with my sister and this place----isn't a sushi place. It's just not good. It's like rolls you can get from a grocery store. Nothing special, if you love sushi don;t be convinced of the other reviews, trust me..........I LOVE sushi as in sashimi, rolls, nigiri, hand rolls, and can eat any type of fish in the world so TRUST me, if you like/love sushi, don't go here!

Weak all over: lame service, and poor sushi. Wanted the back patio and they hadn't cleaned it in some time, it was vaguely reminiscent of an episode of hoarders. Went for the lunch/happy hour now that it's local and MISERABLE FAIL. Don't fall for it.

okay....deep breath here...So my GF and I decided to check this place out in Silver lake after purchasing a living-social voucher. WE live in WEHO but we have heard about fun places to check out in Silver lake so we thought we would head out there on a weekend night. WE showed up around 8PM on a Friday night a few weeks back. It took us about 20min to find parking but it was just a busy night in the area. After parking and walking up and into the restaurant, it took a few minutes to get seated and once we were seated, it honestly took 20 minutes for a server to come over to the table. Then it took another 10 minutes to get a glass of water (total 30min now in the restaurant). We then ordered a few rolls and waited, and waited, and waited some more. To put some context in here, the restaurant was half full at best. We sat in the window in the front of the restaurant next to the sushi bar. We noticed 3 rolls on the counter that sat there for a good 15 minutes and we said to each other "glad that's not our order". Well what do you know.....it was OUR order. Not cool! We decided to eat anyways as we were STARVING. At this point its been almost an hour since we've been at the restaurant and we are just getting our food. I am not one to complain a lot or bash on a restaurant but in this case, the food was awful. I've had so much sushi over the years in many different cities/countries/hole in the walls/very upscale places, etc. This was the worst I have had. We didn't even finish our rolls. Basically, the flavor was bad and it tasted very very FISHY! I know all you sushi fans out there would not enjoy rolls that taste like bad, smelly fish. Let's just say it was a bad experience and bad enough for me to write this review and give a warning out there to others. Bad food plus terrible service does not equal a place where I would want to spend my dining out experience. You're better off picking up a roll at Trader Joe's or the back of Ralph's than spending $50 or $60 on sushi at Koda. Sorry Koda, but just speaking the truth and it was just really bad!

I dont know what the heck everyone was bitching about but we had a pleasant time there. were thinking Koda read all the horrible reviews and cleaned up their act. We bought one of those living social deals and decided to use it on a Saturday night. Before heading out there, we read the reviews on yelp. We took our chances ... Glad we did because we got great service and the food was pretty good. Yes we saw the owner chillin out at the bar... We were waiting for a freakshow to happen. Nothing. Anyway, our experience was nice.

We came here on a Sunday afternoon and it was empty. Happy hour prices, no wait to speak of and a very nice waitress. The sushi was so so. I'm not a sushi snob at all but I wasn't a fan of the taste of my rolls. They were also very very small, I guess to be expected given they were only $4 each. My bf's Philadelphia roll was much better. We did like the gyoza, the miso and the mushroom poppers. We got the seaweed salad which had a weird texture and my bf didn't care for the taste but I was ok with it. The reverse was true for the soba chicken salad. So we switched salads and ate them both. Overall, Im not sure if I'd come here again, likely not. The price cannot be beat and we had wonderful service and no creepy owner in sight. But the sushi was really not so great and I'm really not very picky about sushi.

I was craving some sushi, so a girlfriend and I headed out to Koda for a snack, as it looks relatively legit and it was close. We liked it a lot the first time, so we went a second as well. I imagine now you're wondering why the 2 stars, if I'm obviously a repeat customer. Well, the first time the food was good. My friend ordered a dinner box and I ordered some Udon noodles, and we split an appitizer of fried gyoza. The gyoza was tasty, and by the time my Udon came, we were starving. However, the dinner box was MIA. The poor waitress barely spoken English and offered us some edimame while we waited. We'd finished the edimame and were still waiting when the waitress finally came back. They were out of the fish my friend had ordered so she had to order something else. In comes the second complimentary plate of edimame. Finally, probably 45 minutes to an hour after I'd received my Udon, my friend's plate came. My meal was, of course, cold, but I was so hungry I ate it anyway. To give them some credit, it would have been good had it been warm. For the second visit, our food came out a little closer to the same time (my friend wisened up and ordered a salad), and I was eager to try my Udon warm. I was a little surprised when it came, though, because instead of the big, tasty egg noodles normally served in Udon, it had spaghetti looking things. In fact, I'm not quite convinced that it was not spaghetti. The price wasn't bad, the back patio was nice, but the inside had wierd (I mean *weird*) movies showing. I hear that they have fantastic happy hour prices, so maybe someone else will have better luck getting sushi for lunch there as opposed to Udon for dinner. All in all, I may need to find a new place to satisfy my Udon cravings.

i eat at Koda every once in a while because I want it to get better. It never does. and after last nights experience...... My wife and I walked in around 7:30 on a saturday night. There are three other couples finishing meals. A giant sheet projects Barbarella "uncensored" on the wall. I actually thought that was cool. A 42" TV newly above the bar has "black in America 2" on CNN... we order, all the other couples leave. The owner is streaming movies from netflix on a laptop at the end of the bar, with ear buds in, drinking copious amounts of red wine. Since the place is dead, I ask the waitress to put the Dodger game on. She can't find it on their direct tv. She asks the owner. He decides to look in the LA times, and tells me he can't figure out what channel it is. despite the fact that he has a fucking lap top in front of him. So he puts COPS on. Yes COPS. with bleeped out language, and blurred out hookers. Then he starts talking to the other employees about hookers he's seen, and known, and talks loudly about how the wind blew a hookers skirt up one time and he saw her pussy, Yup he saw her pussy. I sat there stunned. He instantly realized, and said. "whoops" "I apologize for talking loosely". As we waited to pay, he offered some sake. We declined. p.s. the crazyboy roll was cold, and the lobster roll tasted like 7-eleven sushi. The waitress was great.

My first trip to koda, I was definitely excited. My boyfriend and I had been craving nigiri all week and were delighted to find a place that didn't do last call at 9:30. We sat at the bar and were asked kindly by the sushi chef if we could wait a little to order because he was unexpectedly busy. We didn't mind because we enjoy taking time with out meals. We ordered hot sake and received t swiftly. Soon, our orders were taken. We ordered the Ono(white tuna) which was quite fresh. We also were delighted by the scallopnehocj was drizzled with delicious Japanese citrus. Basically the chef made the whole experience very intimate and genuine. I cannot wait to dine here again.

Celebrities, hipsters, and Rocky Horror fans don't have to travel far for sushi. A restaurant with inside out seating and giver of inner goodness is found across from the 99 cent store near Silver Lake's Sunset junction. Koda offers $4 happy hour from 12 PM to 7 PM, every day. Enjoy the delicately prepared benefits of sweet short-grained rice, rolled up in fresh seaweed to the tongue's desire. An array of fresh salads are available to start things off right, like the ocean seaweed salad served on a bed of baby green lettuce. For vegans and vegetarians, there are plenty of options such as an avocado roll and veggie tempura roll. With nearly 20 rolls available at a low price, it doesn't take much to kiss the hunger sianara.

Wow, people really hate this place...i personally love it. The owner is awesome, just like an old school punk rocker who actually has roots in this town, he's unpredictable just like silverlake used to be in the late 90s when it was still cool (remember when keith morris was a busboy at millies and raged against cell phone use while dining?) The good ole days...now all the restraunts In silverfake are homogenized bullshit for spoiled trustfund hipsters...koda rules, richard rules, the sushi is top quality and the beers are cheap, if you don't like it, go somewhere else and spend fifteen bucks on a grassfed burger and congratulate yourself for being so indie and ironic...koda is the soul for what silverlake once was...grow some balls

I've been to Koda several times and I like it, but it is definitely not the best. The servers and cook are usually very nice, and I've never had to wait long at all for my food. The $4 happy hour is a great deal. Things tend to be broken when I go, though. Once, they were only operating part of the kitchen because something was broken, (can't remember what) and I was able to get a couple of rolls (nothing hot though, like soup or edamame) which was totally fine, I was warned before I sat down. I asked the owner, who was doubling as my server, for a glass of water, and he said he couldn't do it, but could pour some peligrino in a glass, which I said was great, thanks. But then at the end of the meal, he charged me for a bottle of peligrino! I went in today, and the front door was off the hinges, broken or something. It was rather cold, as it's raining and 55 degrees out. I don't mind that, though. I feel kind of bad for them, things often seem to be not properly working when I go.

I went there yesterday hoping to score some decent four dollar sushi. The sushi didn't exactly disappoint, considering how cheap it was, but the TV tuned to Fox News above the bar did. Was this the hip and progressive Silver Lake I had heard so much about? Anyway, I proceeded to ask my server if there was any particular reason Fox News was on, and he said that there wasn't. He was polite and offered to change the channel to whatever I wanted. I figured that this had been a programming fluke, and didn't think much of it, until I came in there today to take advantage of the four dollar special again. I did not bother sitting down, but did explain to the waitress that I had come in the previous day and complained about the TV programming. I asked her specifically why Fox News was on. She told me that the owner there, whose name is Richard, liked it that way. I said, thank you and then stepped out, resolved never to set foot in that restaurant again. Mediocre sushi at a good price is not enough of a reason to sacrifice my integrity. A store whose owner promotes blatantly right-wing propaganda does not deserve my patronage, especially one that is located in a part of Silver Lake renowned for its gay-friendly and progressive qualities.

I wish this place would close and a REAL sushi bar would open there, with a nice owner that doesn't hang around all the time, get drunk and yell at people. Silverlake deserves better. Way better.

i Love their rolls. but sadly, one saturday night when me and my bf went there, the service was HORRIBLE!! horrible as in we had to wait for our glass of water for 40 min!! can u imagine that and they didn't even take our order, didn't even gave us menu. i do understand that saturday nights are the busiest, but that night the service was just toooooo bad that we left after finally getting a cup of effing water. my bf did talk with the manager right before we left, u know wat his gay ass said: "u should have called me over, it's not my fault" f*ck this

As my girlfriend and i were walking up and down Sunset to check out a few stores, we began to get hungry and noticed they have $4 happy hour, noon to 4pm. So we thought we would give it a shot As we stood outside looking reading the menu, a guy in a trench coat walked up from one of the patio seats and said "first round of sake is on me!" We were going to eat here anyways but hey, you can't say no to free sake! Inside there was a guitar player playing really chill music. It was Saturday lunch hour and it wasn't crowded. Our waitress was very nice and attentive As for the food, i can't really complain. I didn't throw-up like a lot of people have in these reviews. The prices were very good, the portions were good, the service was good, the restaurant was clean, the owner was nice, the live music was good, so i simply can't complain...

Me an my fiance wanted some fried rice and sake, however it was 9pm on a Sunday night....Had a choice to go east or west on Sunset...went east and found Koda....I like the vibe and customer service. Food was good, but had the potential to be excellent had they not served the "micro shrimp" with my rice. Please guys give us some healthy large shrimp! Thus the 4 stars

Well it seems you don't have to go to the Far East to experience some amazing sushi and sake. In fact you only have to go as far as the Eastside aka Silverlake to find some of the most inventive dishes around. It's called Koda and if you haven't driven past it or tried it, you need to get on it. Only 5 months old, this place is already serving like a pro. Some of the highlights are the ginger scallion cakes with this slight ginger after taste and a hint of vinegar. The Shrimp Handgranades!! These will soon become those things you have the 4am cravings for. Shrimp wrapped in a prawn with this spicy mayo that almost takes on a creamy cheesy quality. DEELISH. Let's also just talk about the Spicy Benjamin for a second. Great texture with cilantro and PEANUTS (in sushi, who knew!) It almost has a kind of spicy thai/mexican taste going. Really unique and yummy. The Culture Shock with eel and chocolate (Huuuwhat?!) and the Crystal Shrimproll was superbly simple and clean and just really worked. The good, but not mind-blowing dishes were the Broccoli Roll. Great for vegetarians, but I like a little fish in my sushi (go figure). Also the My First Love with smoked hamachi was kinda eh. I think it would be awesome if they just used regular hamachi instead of smoked. But if you like smoked fish then you'll dig it :) Also the Shrimp Balls were good, but a bit too sweet for my taste. Almost like a macaroon with fresh coconut. These would be good for dessert. Overall, it's a beautiful, clean and simple place that packs quite an impressive punch. And the servers are all really cute. Our waitress had really cool purple and blue hair and was super friendly. Oh and did I mention it's CHEAP!! You could have a foodie field day with this place (I know we did) and just try a little bit of everything 5 STARS, A+ Gogogogogogogogoogogogogogogogo!! :)

Went here for takeout and: a) had to wait a long time for a simple order b) sat at the bar next to the well-meaning but kind of sleazy owner. I feel guilty even writing this because he was nothing but nice to me, but just his energy was abrasive. For starters, you get the sense that he's on edge, watching the employees' every move, which is uncomfortable. He also sort of reprimanded the waitress regarding my order in front of me, which was uncalled for... ps. The waitress was lovely - the best part of the experience. c) Despite getting seaweed salad on the house for my wait, all of the food was meh. The tempura was greasy and bland. The edamame seemed old, and bland. The best part of the meal honestly was the rice. d) For what i'd expected to pay $13-$15 for takeout lunch, ended up being $20.

was in the neighborhood for dinner, and conveniently got my vegetarian friend distracted long enough to pass by forage without her looking at the menu, so we went here (see what happens when you don't eat animal protein? slower reflexes). got there around 6:30 and found that we were in the happy hour zone - a single page menu and everything on it $4. had a bottle of cold house sake (not bad - not even sho chiku bai). i had a spicy tuna roll (because i usually fall back on the first time at a new sushi place), salmon avocado roll, and shrimp asparagus roll. the vegetarian got a hermit roll (they were out of hippy rolls, whatever the hell is in those), and some other vegetable roll or other. for the record, she didn't complain. though maybe she was just too weak from abstaining from animal proteins to object. anyway, my stuff was ok. not great but certainly not scary. in fact, i've had scarier early in the week at saito's (my favorite sushi in silverlake). gotta say something about the review from 7/5 that noted a red C on the door. it's an A now. and why the F*$K would you even go to a restaurant that serves raw fish that has a C rating?!?

So I did the master cleanse for 3 days and in those three days of ingesting nothing but lemon juice and maple syrup with cayenne pepper, I dreamt of eating a lot of things including sushi. The sushi at Koda, even for $4, was awful. Maybe I should have taken a hint when I saw that the man making my sushi was a white guy. The rice was dry and undercooked. The albacore was just bad. The eel avocado roll was probably the best one but still nothing special. All in all, I was very disappointed that my first real meal was a flop. If you want good sushi in the hollywood area, Sushi Ike is the place to go!

Excellent and long Happy Hour. Good variety, with selections color coded for vegetarians, and eco friendly dishes. The Mushrooms are fantastic. Service can be a little slow, but it's usually spot on. Parking is a bit tough, but thats not their fault.

Koda sushi is amazing. I love the food and the service. After one time of going here, my waiter recognized going forward. I try to get rolls and sushi each time I go. Their sushi is always fresh and they have fantastic rolls. I try different ones everytime. I forget the name of the one roll I always get, but it has albacore and jalepenos on it. It is delicious and everyone I have brought there has loved it too. They have great happy hour prices for there drinks. When it is not happy hour time, the drinks are still reasonable. There is also a great selection of saki. The patio behind the restuarant is lovely. It has a great ambiance and you can bring your dog to hang with you. There is parking in back, but it is limited, so count on having to street park.

I had an okay time here the first few times I went. Too expensive for what they serve: I think any sushi place that falls into the mayo/eel sauce trap needs to be cheaper, and isn't really a sushi place anyway, but it was near my house and I could get a nice sake buzz and that awesome soy sauce/wasabi burn that I love without going too far. I'll graph that sentence later. But tonight put the kibosh on that. I can't remember the last time I left a restaurant actually experiencing anger. One of my favorite things to do is sit at a sushi bar, by myself, order from the guys, and read a magazine. I sat down at the bar, and verified with the waitress that I could order from the sushi chef directly. She said yes but that other menu items should be ordered from her. So, I order a sunonomo salad from her, and salmon from him. Waiting. . . . waiting . . . .waiting. . . sparkling water arrives . . . sushi chef is inexplicably carving up shrimp, doing nothing for my order . . . waiting . . . waiting. Salad arrives. It is sickly sweet, but I start eating it anyway. Chef still carving shrimp. Waitress comes over and asks if everything is okay. I ask if the sushi chef will get to my order soon, and she says, looking around a virtually empty restaurant, that "they were really backed up." I take this opportunity to send the salad back; I tell her to charge me for it because I ate some, but that it was just too sweet. She says she'll take it off the bill. Chef puts the shrimp in front of me. I told him I ordered salmon. He tells me I ordered shrimp. Salmon, I say. Shrimp, he says, ARGUING with me about it. So, I get up and walk out. The salad had already been removed from the bill, and the sparkling water came from the bar, i.e. was soda water, so I didn't think I owed them anything. Wouldn't you know the owner comes out to the car SCREAMING that I had left without paying my bill. Not a question about what happened, no inquiry about what the bill actually was. I forked over $5 bucks for soda water and left, seething. It was a lot worse than it sounds, I swear.

I don't understand what all of these negative reviews are about. After reading them I was very hesitant to go..I thought "oh great...the service is going to be horrible and the owner is going to do something crazy." Non of this happened!! I went with a group of 6 and we really had a great time! There were two waitresses who were on it! Always helping us and we hardly had to wait for anything. There were two sushi chefs behind the counter...great sushi! Great tempura veggies and shrimp. Great atmosphere. We went on Saturday night and the place got crowded around 9pm. I would recommed the Cajun sushi! Maybe after all the bad reviews more servers were hired and the owner has calmed down? He was at the bar the whole night watching TV and having pleasant conversations with people. I would say for sure give this place a try!

What's with all the negative reviews of this place? I thought Koda was the bomb, and I've been there twice. I had an awesome experience there last night - outstanding service, and an extremely accommodating sushi chef for the picky eater (such as myself). The food was fresh, well put together, and I thought just the right size for a big all-encompassing bite. Plus, the quiet atmosphere is a relief from all the crazy LA-ness outside. Another pro: Practically everything is $4 until 7 pm, including apps and booze.

I went here last Saturday with my sister and my boyfriend. After considering eating at the Mexican and Indian restaurants next door that were both packed, we settled on KODA. I was a little weary of a restaurant on Sunset that had plenty of tables to choose from as well as an empty bar on a Saturday night, but we were hungry. We ordered the Fusion Salmon roll, Caterpillar roll and the Crazy Boy roll. The salmon in the fusion roll was fresh and melted in my mouth. I definitely recommend that one for any salmon lovers. The caterpillar roll was a caterpillar roll. It was good but nothing spectacular. I did enjoy the crazy boy roll even though I'm not a big fan of fried rolls. I would try this one again if I went back and someone else ordered it. If you are in Silver Lake looking for sushi with no wait, I recommend KODA.

Next in my series of reviews of inexplicably always empty Silverlake spots. I was wondering why Koda is never more than a third full, max, any day of the week, usually sporting just a table or two of patrons, but from fellow Yelpers I'm beginning to get a clue. The place IS a bit like a sushi place in a David Lynch movie. You've got the owner ALWAYS sitting in the same place and an eerie quiet. Usually in sushi spots at leasts the chefs are joking and laughing with each other. I don't care if it's bizarro, though, I like Koda for a few reasons: 1) Aforementioned emptiness means I can drop in any old time 2) Surprisingly good sake selection for a place that is not exactly high-end sushi 3) Lots of vegetarian roll options for the veggos in the party 4) The spicy miso is to die for and could probably kill most colds and many hangovers The fish is fine- not spectacular- and it's true that the service can be a bit bemused and sometimes just absentee. I give them that extra star love because I suspect that pretty soon we wont have ol' Koda to kick around anymore.

From the outside this place looks pricier than it is. Inside it's a normal sushi joint. Nothing fancy. Big screen on the wall where I hear they play movies. Big flat screen TV over the sushi bar where I sat. The service was slow. Funny thing, it was empty. The $4 Happy hour menu was surprisingly big. I asked about a hot pepper appetizer, but instead ordered sweet potato fries (WTF, at a sushi joint! what was I thinking?) which they were out of, and a Cali roll and Spicy Tuna. The earlier review mentioning about overpaying for $4 sushi...I kind of agree. Instead of cutting it into 8 tiny rolls give me 6 decent sized ones. While eating the waitress brings out hot pepper appetizer and looked surprised when I said I didn't order it. Got a $2.50 green ice tea which came with refills. The sushi was decent, service was just ok. What annoyed me was, what I'm assuming to be, the owner and his VERY LOUD RUDE friend, who stood right next to me start talking about what to watch on the TV. They destroyed the peaceful quiet dinner I was enjoying.

Waiting out the madness of sunset junction, we decided to eat dinner at a real sit down restaurant instead of gorging on more carnie food. As we walked down sunset flanked by throbbing music that created visions of sweaty shirtless guys in my head, we saw the magical sign - $4 happy hour 1-7pm Sat-Sun. SCORE! the 4 of us went to town and ordered a ton of stuff as we were all pretty hungry. highlights for me were the soba chicken salad, eggplant sauteed in miso, yakitori (which came with rice & miso soup) and eel avocado roll. they werent the best things i've ever tasted, but at $4 a pop was a good deal. we sat outside and service was a bit slow at first, but then the new waitress that got assigned to us was much better. after our gorgefest, the tab came out to $14pp after tax+tip. A good find for a japanese fix (during happy hour) in silverlake!

yay - they have some vegetarian / vegan option for sushi yay - service is good yay - price is alright - decent yay - supposedly their "soft crab sushi" is pretty yum. i didn't taste it, but it smelled it blah - parking sucks at night blah - they don't have green tea tempura ice cream!!!! what??? blah - it's really just quite ordinary... a place i wouldn't mind going again if i were in the neighborhood, but it's not worth my time for the drive just to go there

Used the living social deal to get 50% off on a $50 bill. Went on a sunday afternoon when it wasn't busy at all. there was only one server and one sushi chef at the time. Our food still took awhile to make and the service was less than stellar. The food was above my expectations- but I was REALLY hoping for the "show" that everyone else keeps raving about. The manager was around, but he didn't make a scene (boo!!!!!). ultimately the deals are good ($4 deal is pretty darn good), and the quality of the food is good. The service isn't great, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time and company to sit there and chill while you wait for your food (and the bill). PS - as an FYI the manager is this shorter white dude with dirty blond hair. Slightly on the chubby side. I described him in case anyone else goes to Koda to eat and wants to try and catch the fireworks. You know who to look out for!

If you're stuck for a place to eat - for example, it's Sunday night, and all the great sushi spots are closed - then this is your alternative. Our waiter was generous and kind, but the kitchen was slow and disorganized. About 70% of the sushi we ordered tasted fresh. So, you know, it's o-kay. Just nothing to get really psyched about.

now happy hour is 4 dollars for everything instead of 5! that's more like happy hour prices for drinks and since i frequent this place, saving 5 bucks every time that i go is definitely a plus. stopped in this week on that rainy monday and warmed up with some miso and hot sake. got the hijiki edamame salad as always- all the textures and flavors balance perfectly. tried an albacore roll which was fine and a tempura cali roll since we wanted hot stuff. and was that roll hot!! each piece was individually fried so the heat really stayed in the roll. it was good but a little too fried for me. a nice, quick lunch on a rainy day...koda always hits the spot when i am craving some yummy affordable sushi.

Koda, sweet. Here, I managed to finish off my entire meal, which is a rarity. In this case, it could have been because A) I liked the food or B) the waiter took ages to pick up our check. Despite that little blunder, Koda gets a thumbs up. For dinner, I had crunch roll along with the bento box of chicken teriyaki. For $14, it came with salad, miso, shrimp tempura and rice. I found the chicken to be rather bland at first, but I actually grew to like it. And...I can't really contest against a sushi place that has Beirut and Band of Horses on its playlist. Yes ma'am... Experience-wise, the crowd at Koda was more sparse than crowded, although people trickled in and out steadily. I wouldn't recommend Koda for any loud, boisterous gatherings, but it would be nice for a smaller, more intimate group of diners. Overall, Koda is a clean, tasty, and stylish fixture to a drag of other equally cute eats (there is a popular gelato place down the street for dessert). Indoors, Koda caters to a simple aesthete. Its Sunset-fronted locale offers ample opportunity to observe the tranquil flow of life away from the bustle of Everywhere Else in L.A. I always forget I'm in Los Angeles on this side of town.

Great Quality Sushi If you want quick, cheap, questionable sushi, I think 7 Eleven stocks it. Laid back atmosphere, parking in the back, as well as cool in deck. I've actually had a party which took up the entire back deck & the owner brought in an additional sushi chef to accomodate us (we let him know a few weeks in advance) Creative rolls for every palate. Cozy atmosphere and during the day families can be seen with their kids (I've never experienced a bratty kid in there). Sometimes it get swamped and service slows a bit but staff is always really nice. Owner is cool guy who is trying to be more low-key. Name a better spot in silvlerlake ... see that, you can't

Like other reviews have stated, the owner is a creepy nut job who sits at the bar playing on his laptop and yelling at his staff. My fiance and I had one particulary bizarre evening at Koda when a man came in asking to use the bathroom. The owner told him the bathroom was for customers, but the man told him, "I just wanted to wash up because my hand is bleeding" and revealed a small cut on his hand. At this point the owner jumps off his stool, screams "COME ON!," runs to the kitchen door, hits it so hard that he knocks a hole in it, and holds it open for the bleeding guy, still screaming, "COME ON! LET"S GO! IN HERE!" The bleeding man, the entire staff, and all of the patrons looked on, completely bewildered. Why would you bring a bleeding person into your restaurant kitchen instead of just showing them to the bathroom? And why would you scream at the top of your lungs, alarming all of your patrons? Additionally, the service here is terrible! They will screw up your order, forget to bring your drinks, and move at a snail's pace. The food is decent, but not worth the price.

very clean upscale beautiful. sushi was so yummy. bathroom was really nice not sure why the rating is so low. its really good. i just dont like that they were playing an old drag queen movie on the large screen. sushi is beautiful. chef was kind of slow but i liked the sunomono salad and the miso was good. they also make special request and the prices are very reasonable. i felt really good after eating here.the spicy tuna was yummy.

Never again. Talk about not having anything to drink for about 10 minutes. Getting the waiters attention and being ignored while said waiter was paying attention to one specific table. Sushi rolls being left on the table next to us for about 5 minutes then being asked if they were ours. Snappy hostess needs to chill out and realize that patrons are not her buddies and she can't talk to them in an unprofessional manner just because they are young. The food was mediocre at best. Not my place.

Service is SSLOWWWWW! one guy filling sushi orders for the entire restaurant. The happy hour is reasonable but the sushi rolls are the size of the pack you can buy at 7-11.

Some friends and I were walking by and were tricked into entering with the promise of a free pitcher. They put us out on the back patio because we wanted to smoke, and then promptly forgot we were there. The service was glacial. The food was mediocre. We peed in the alley instead of in the bathroom, out of spite.

This may be the most under-rated restaurant in Silver Lake. The food here is consistently fresh and delicious. The menu is smallish and the more traditional sushi is a bit overpriced. KODA will appeal to anyone who appreciates more modern, "americanized" sushi and rolls. The house KODA roll is fantastic, as are the unusual Crazy Boy and Jakarta rolls. It's never completely empty in there, but I've also never had to wait for a table. If you're in Silver Lake, a fan of sushi rolls and tempura, and not in the mood to deal with a douchey, hipster crowd or an hour wait, give KODA a try.

I will never go here again. The sushi was mediocre, but that wasn't the problem. The owner's behavior is. I went in to place a carryout order during the day on a saturday. The place was about half full. The server who waited on me was very helpful and courteous. In the meantime, the owner, already incredibly drunk, continued to pour himself beers, drink, and scream at the soccer match on tv, right in the dining room in front of customers. Then, a cook or kitchen employee came in, having just returned from running a personal errand for the owner with what looked like a liquor store bag. The owner BERATED him for getting the wrong thing, swearing at him left and right and screaming in his face. All in front of every customer. Everyone in the place was mortified. Wrong on so many levels. I would not have blamed the cook if he'd hit the guy, but he kept his cool. Anyone who treats their employees like that does not deserve to be rewarded with any success. Despicable.

I purchased a coupon thru Livingsocial to check this out as I LOOOVVE sushi..THEN I checked out Yelp..Many bad reviews...I was terrified to go, since I heard the owner was a schmuck???? Well, I wasn't eating him..so all that mattered was the sushi..I went on the LAST day of my coupon - a Monday nite..and found the place to be sorta cool - however with all the bad reviews, I won't go back..too many good sushi bars in LA to support someone who is mean to their staff..

Ohh I was sooo dissapointed. Not with the food, not with the service, but the lack of the drunken show I have been reading about!!! The food was orgasmic, the service was great! And the owner who is this "drunken creep" I found interesting. I don't know if he hired a new manager to keep him on check, but the guy was tame. Me and my girlfriend were actually looking foward towards a dinner and a show, but nay, we were denied. We actually got the chance to speak to the owner who was an 'odd' but interesting guy. Sure he's surley, but screw it! He came to our table and told a story on how he fell off a horse and tumbled down a cliff explaining the scratches on his arms. Which I replied "hey chicks dig scars!" in which he actually opened up his shirt to expose his scared torso. Then went on how he trains in kenpo at 4 a.m. in which I belive. His fists are huge! If your like me and dig & accept people for who they are, then you will hope he comes to your table for a slury story. But if you got a stick up your ass and take offense easily, I suggest another sushi joint. Plus it didn't hurt that they hooked it up w/ free round of Sake!

Actually 3 1/2 stars. The prices are just too good for happy hour. Pretty much $4 for everything. We enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms, spicy tuna rolls and a veggie roll. Also the obligatory miso soups and edamame. Plenty of sake too. I enjoyed the mochi ice cream. We were there for hours and spent about $50...yes because the company was enjoyable but also because the service was pretty darn slow. It's OK...the owner is kind of a Silver Lake character-changing his restaurant from Cajun to sushi overnight. Great east-side location. Easy street parking.

Had a very uneventful experience at Koda. Minus Stars for: Received a flyer listing dozens of $4 items (i.e. rolls, salads, appetizers, ...) for happy hour and when i got there the unfriendly waitress told me that we can only choose from the list of rolls-- nothing else. i would have really understood if a) we got there closer to the later hours of the happy hour, but we got there at the start of happy hour b) the place were packed with so many patrons, but there were only 2 other tables of patrons or c) had the waitress even apologized for the inconvenience. After ordering our ca rolls, spicy tuna, philly rolls, and shrimp tempura rolls, the waitress brought out two icewaters out of dirty glasses. (one had lipstick stains, eeeuwww gross) when i told her to exchange the glasses, she again didn't apologize for that. After waiting a long time for our order to come out, she had forgotten the shrimp tempura rolls. and then when she finally did come out it was to tell us that they didn't have any tempura rolls and to order something else. not once after our order did she check in to make sure everything was okay. now i know that most of these things were beyond the server's control (the limited menu and dirty glasses). but when there are problems with the food, you kinda have to make up for it with the service. Plus Stars for: As for the rolls, the ones that finally made it out were good.

This place was pretty good. The inside had a little bit of a fishy odor to it when we walked in, which made the decision to sit outside pretty easy, but it is right on sunset so if it wasn't late on a sunday evening when traffic was light, i wouldn't want to eat sushi flavored with car and bus exhaust. The server was nice enough and came outside to check on us not too frequently but enough that our needs for more beer and sake were met. the specialty rolls were the highlight and the sashimi was large and pretty fresh (despite the odor inside the restaurant). also both of the appetizers that we had were tasty and well presented. good enough to go once, whether or not a return visit is warranted is yet to be determined.

Well, I pondered giving this a fourth star despite the fact that the food is really just in the realm of mediocre. And I pondered it for one reason only, Happy Hour. This is hands down the best deal I have ever seen at a sushi restaurant. Not only that, but the happy hour deals are 7 days a week, 5-7pm. That really is hard to beat. I think it was mentioned in another review, but the appetizers, salads, and a short list of rolls are all $4 a piece. Sake is $4 for a small and $7 large, and they actually have a very nice organic sake (at least for the cold) i discovered during our most recent heat wave. Yes, the service often leaves a little to be desired, I have had items ordered but not delivered and times when I couldn't get a waiter to look my way for far too long... but at this price, I have a really hard time complaining. The sushi is not universally good or bad, I have had some rolls that tasted wonderfully fresh and I have had one or two that tasted a bit off, but I have found that as long as I order a few standby classics (spicy tuna roll, for example) I leave extremely satisfied. Now, I've reviewed sushi before, and I clearly love sushi. If I am taking my girlfriend out for a nice dinner, I'd choose one of the several fantastic sushi restaurants in Los Angeles that deal in extremely fresh and exotic seafood and spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $150. If I'm going out with my roommate, we're going to stop here during those magic two hours and spend less than $30 between the two of us.

Wow. Worst restaurant experience of my life. By far. The waiter at another place laughing at my friend's order and saying "that's really all for you?" a couple nights before? No big deal after this. So, went here with my best friend on fourth of July. We had been there several times before, usually for lunch, and had had good experiences, though I had noticed the odd looking, disheveled owner before. But he'd only been there quietly in the back when I'd been there before, I'd never had a problem with him, and he often wasn't there at all during lunchtime. The food had been good. So, we decided to go there again and were grateful that something was open on the 4th of July. But soon the owner, with messed up hair, a beet red drunken face, and open cuts on his arm, came over and started talking to us. First he just moved things around on the table. He brought us napkins and chopsticks, which we weren't overly happy about because he was quite dirty and did not smell good either. The waiter came over and removed the items the owner had brought and replaced them with fresh ones. We had ordered and didn't know whether to just leave then or ask for the food to go or what, and things had already gotten strange. The owner would randomly come over and take things off our table, like the soy sauce dishes, and then the waiter would have to come over with new ones and apologize and say he didn't know why the owner had done that. Then the owner came over and moved something around. I said thank you, and he said, "You don't have to keep saying thank you!" Then he launched, incoherently, into a story about how he'd fallen and been badly injured. At first I thought he was trying to explain why he was in such poor condition, but then it seemed like he was talking about the distant past. My friend and I had no idea what to do. I said I was sorry about his injury and he said to stop saying I was sorry. Then he asked if we liked that men went out and worked so we could stay home. At this point we were both very uncomfortable. He went away, but came back and asked if we liked being served by a man, and if we liked that men took care of us and we could have the babies. At this point, we really didn't know what to do. We'd already eaten most of our food and were just waiting for one last roll. The owner now came over and said he was sorry. He said he knew he wasn't a good manager, but he was a designer. He said he'd picked out everything in the restaurant himself, including $30/yard imported Belgian fabric for the chairs and he gestured around to everything in the restaurant. He said the meal was on the house. He clearly knew he was acting inappropriately, but what a strange confession that he knew he was a bad manager. He went away again, but began singing at the top of his lungs from the back of the restaurant. Everyone in the restaurant seemed uncomfortable, but not sure what to do. The staff didn't do anything, they acted as though this were all fairly normal. Then, he began lifting a chair over his head and yelling, "Do you see this?! Do you see this?" repeatedly. I did not look at him but could see him out of the corner of my eye. Was he going to throw the chair? What was going on? We wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. When the waiter came by, we asked for a check, because we wanted to make sure that we weren't ditching the waiter with the bill or something if we left. He said, "Oh, he said it was on the house. Just run." Yes. "Just run" was the actual advice he gave us. We left him a tip and got out of there. Needless to say, I will never be going back. And after reading some of the other horror story reviews on here, I hope anyone who checks yelp will seriously reconsider patronizing this establishment. This man is clearly unstable. I feel very sorry for the employees, I hope they're being paid well...

Not horrible. I mean, it's not "fishy" or anything, but the service was only so-so and nothing really stood out about this place besides the fact that it's in the middle of everything. I guess the food was just kind of boring.

It's a nice little place for a simple bite of fish, an Yibisu beer and some considerately priced sake. Mister Evan wanted to go for dinner last night and I was lazy and not wanting to eat anything heavy so he suggested this little place super-close to home. I hadn't been since they first opened. I would have given it 5 stars back then because they always had an amazing selection of fish and other fun traditional items found at my favorite sushi bars. It appears that they have had to succumb to the the clientele and stick to rolls and fusion-y type stuff but that was fine with me last night. I really enjoyed the AHI POKE. Excellent! and the YELLOW TAIL was very fresh and nicely cut. The staff is really nice and the place is pretty, clean, and has great lighting. I also love the fact that they are open late. Not the best place in the world but very good for what it is. I will return when in the neighborhood. : )

Let me try to set the tone here....it was a dope spot...nice vibe...food pretty good BUT my waitor was high. Plain and simple the brother was clocked out. Gotta check out their appetizer: shrimp balls. yummers! So let's go over it again...food good-waitor high.

I think I actually liked it. The crazy boy roll was a first for me. It was deep fried with imitation crab meat and salmon drizzled with eel sauce. The spicy scallops wasn't in the usual sushi form, instead it was in a roll which produced a lot more pieces. It was fresh which is a plus. The caterpillar roll was decent although the eel sauce was overly salty. The ambiance was chill (garden state soundtrack playing in the background) and service was a bit slow since there was only one chef and one server. Overall, this is probably the only other sushi restaurant I'd consider trying again.

This restaurant is as doomed as his last Cajun venture wtih a name no one could pronounce. The food is awful - the staff is rude and just as slow as it was when it was the Cajun place and that CREEPY owner just sits at his bar on plays on his computer - talk about an atmosphere killer. This guy is his own worst enemy - driving people away. He has no personality and people aren't leaving their homes to go have a meal to stare at you tapping away on the internet. My first experience at the restaurant consisted of me asking where they get their fish and the response from the sushi chef was "the sea". This is NOT even a semi real sushi place - go to Pazzaz Sushi or make the trip to Katsu Ya

I was impressed with this place. We sat at the bar and the quality of the fish was first class. The sushi was very fresh and a good size and the prices reasonable. I had two orders of the yellowtail it was so delicious. Really the best I had had in quite some time. I kept ogling the size of the speciality roles that were coming out for other customers. I was also impressed with the service. We arrived around 8:00pm on a Friday night with no reservation and my wife and 5 year old daughter were both tired, cranky and hungry (we really should have stayed home!). First we complained that we were sitting under an AC vent, the waiter had it turned off, then we complained that the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" playing on the projection screen was frightening our daughter and they changed it to "Cat In The Hat" (she spent the rest of the meal laughing). I didn't know what Saki I wanted so the waiter recommended a cold one and brought it out. After he poured the first cup, I actually bothered to look at the menu and said I preferred the unfiltered kind and he took it back and exchanged it, no problem. Then we sent back the grilled Salmon and rice (that was not on the menu) that we ordered for our daughter as it had some kind of pepper on it and she would not eat it. They brought out another that was grilled plain with a side of Teriyaki sauce and she was as happy as a clam. My wife thought the spice on her "spicy" scallop roll was too overpowering so we cancelled the order that I had placed for another one. The Sushi chef then inquired if we liked the roll and when we told him we didn't really care for it, he took the one we did eat off the bill. Now, I wouldn't blame you for reading this and thinking what a nightmare we were and what we were doing out in the first place and you would be right. Parents like us who come out on a Friday night make me crazy. Honestly, we are not usually this difficult, but we were definitely having an off night. It happens. The whole thing could have been a complete cluster, but they saved the day and I really appreciate that. Now I would not describe this place as "kid friendly" per se, the crowd was mostly young locals, but they went above and beyond to accomodate us. The entire bill for the three of us with Saki came to under $65 and we were stuffed. I would definitely recommend this place and we will come back (although I would not blame them for never wanting to see us again :-))

My sister started working here a couple months ago, so of the two times that I've eaten here, the meal was 50% off or free. All of their sushi I've had was really good, but I mostly order the fancy rolls. Anything that is fried or has something fried in it is A+! Their spicy tuna is the best I've had, and I'm a huge sucker for their spicy mayo. It's such a better dipping alternative to soy sauce. The only down part is the selection of desserts. They're a bit on the boring side. But if you decide to dine here, do yourself a favor and order their crispy rice cakes with spicy tuna, and ask for extra spicy mayo on the side for dipping. HEAVEN IN YOUR MOUTH. There's a nice ambiance inside, but they also have outdoor seating on a cozy patio in the back. And there are heaters back there so you don't freeze during the colder nights.

I'm new to yelp but not to Koda. I agree regarding the owner, he is a trip but definitely harmless. My wife and I have been eating here for several years now and have never had a bad experience. This is the freshest sushi within the 5 mile radius from Sunset Junction. I highly recommend the rice cakes with spicy tuna. Prices are on par with the quality of food and underpriced considering the area.

This is the place I go to when I want okay sushi. It's expensive considering the quality of the fish. None the less, I have been here a few times. I have not been able to try the happy hour as of yet but, it is something I will try in the near future. All the fish I have tried here is average except the tuna. Every time I try it, it's excellent. The decor is modern and at night has a nice dim feel to it.

Strange place. Bought a coupon on dealfinder and the food was decent and reasonably priced. I would have given it 3 or 4 stars even but there was an extremely strang,e drunk owner who was hitting on the wait staff and even chased a table of people out. It was not relaxing to say the least. I thought it was odd that the place was 3/4 empty on a saturday night when the food was decent, but then I saw all the other posts about this owner. I'd go somewhere else, unless you get a great deal on groupon or something.

I love finding new places to eat in Silverlake - it's the perfect meeting spot for my friend who lives on the westside and myself, who lives on the eastside. I was excited to try Koda Sushi after reading reviews on Yelp... but have to say I was mildy disappointed. First off, they should have a sign saying they have free parking in the back. I for one ended up parking on Lucille (also known as crack alley) - where after dark bums will mimic you saying your goodbyes. I should've known better and just parked in that lot on the corner or Lucille and Sunset, but I like to adhere to the parking for customers sign only. Got there at about 645pm, only 1 other table occupied and a mother and son duo seated at the sushi bar. One waitress, super attentive (so attentive in fact that I felt like she was rushing me). One sushi chef, pretty slow with the sushi considering the place was nearly empty... I can't imagine how it is at it's peak. Food is kinda pricey: edamame is $4, Miso is $3, rolls about $8 - 12/each and really quite small. Crunchy roll is $10 and probably came in about 6 pieces (small pieces). Aside from price and serving size, I'd have to say the fish was very fresh. But can you get that same freshness somewhere else? Probably... Ambience was cute... cute paintings, setting were very cute but in the 1.5 hour we were there - they kept playing with the lights that we went from extreme bedroom lighting to so bright I can every single bit of lint floating in the air. Also, they couldn't get the radio volume just right that there was one point where the whole restaurant raised their heads and looked straight to the back of the restaurant. It's likely I won't come back... I'd love to try Pho Cafe in Silverlake next. :)

I basically come here for happy hour. The food is pretty good quality, but nothing that'll blow you away. That being said, a nasu miso appetizer, tuna roll, and small bottle of sake (equal to about 2 beers) is $12 before tax and tip. Not bad.

Used to come here often. The food is fine. Chefs are very nice and servers seem to go out of their way. However all this was sadly trumped by how rudely we have been treated by the owner who is always there at the bar overseeing everything and adding a very less than warm vibe. We have never spent less than a hundred bucks there (things add up quickly) and tried to be friendly but somehow have always been treated like intruders. We don't bring our kids. My wife and I are not loud or disruptive. We're a pretty mellow, mature couple. Our last encounter with his rudeness finally did it for us. We hadn't stepped into the restaurant before he started serving us some terrible attitude. We both looked at each other and without a word we turned and were gone. Nobody should be treated like that. Let alone regular customers. Too many other options for sushi. And for the same price you can get Sushi Gen! Discourteous owner beats out decent sushi every time. So, reluctantly, sayonara, Koda.

*Update* I won't reduce their star rating, but thought people should know, I just walked past there on Saturday and they had a C rating. Thats gross for a pizza place, but for a sushi place, thats outright disgusting. Koda has the same owner as the restaurant that was previously here, Cirxa. I remember that restaurant getting a few C's before closing. I dropped in here for the happy hour specials last week. 3$ sapporo and select rolls. So, I can't honestly give a good thorough review here, but for happy hour right down the road it wasn't bad. There were 5 or 6 rolls on special, mostly veggie & salmon and california rolls. Nothing special, but again, the rolls in theory are nothing special, so what do you expect. So, not a typical sushi experience, but it did entice me to go back and try the real menu.

adorable little japanese sushi cafe! came here with ernie and danny last night for a late night beer and small roll. i reaaaallllyyy needed fish. sometimes i just HAVE to swallow a lump of cold, clean fish, and i was checking out yelp for late night sushi happy hours on the eastside and koda popped up. we drove over there, parked and walked in and enjoyed some beers and rolls! my spicy tuna was verrrrryyy spicy. very good. the ambiance is very cute. it was also very romantic. greeeaaat for dates.

Simple, clean, fun, creative... SAKE too, I liked my experience at Koda, and my server(s) were awesome! Prices were fine, it's kinda small, but that's also a cool aspect. I'm still trying to find "my" sushi place here in LA, I had 1 in NYC that I loved, and have yet to find a comparison out here, but regardless, I liked Koda a lot. I have to admit though, I'm just gonna keep looking for that place that I just love.

I can't say I disagree with anything I've read on here so far, but my wife and I still love going here, especially for happy hour (5-7). The price is right, the sushi (and Americanized versions thereof) is always good, and it's rarely crowded. Parking in the back scares me, and I imagine the owner probably has a few dead bodies in the freezer, but what can you do? One of the male waiters there also has the IQ of a goldfish, but aside from that it's well worth the oddities. The Ocean Salad is AWESOME!

I feel bad for lagging an entire week to review this wonderful place. This is by far one of the best sushi places I have been in LA. New, fresh, stylish and clean. Its not over the top fancy and not a back alley sushi stand. Located on Sunset in the silverlake area, they have convenient parking in the back, and its never too crowded to park there. We went last Friday night around 9:00 and had no problem parking and sitting at the bar. Prices a reasonable $6-10 for various rolls. I recommend: -Crazy boy -Hand grenades -Cal rolls -Pink Flame So good I came back on the next day!

Came with JT after bartending a wedding (way fun btw). The ambiance goes for the sparse, modern, Silverlake-y look which is kinda nice. It's a little pricey for what it is, but apparently the Happy Hour is more worth it, where a ton of stuff on the menu is $4. We did have the Grenades (little spicy sushi things) and they were pretty decent.

There was a time I was frequenting this delicious establishment twice a week. You cannot beat the Happy Hour sushi from 12-7pm; only $4 a roll and $4 sake to wash it down. The service can be slow at times, but well worth it.

Came here a week ago cause I helped a friend move into the area. Once we got there we saw a sign "happy hour every day, $4.00 sushi". scored! The food was very tastie! Kinda empty inside so the service was fast. We had too much rolls to mention what we had but every single thing they brought out was soooo good. Oh order the stuffed muchrooms. BOMB.

I had been avoiding going to this place due to some scary reviews from there but tonight i was pleasantly surprised. They have a long happy hour which they have $4 on a really nice selection of rolls, apps, sakes, salads, etc. I got the spicy tuna and the Philadelphia rolls off the happy hour menu and the crunchy roll off the regular menu. All though the spicy tuna was not the best i have ever had it was definitely above par. The philly roll was very tasty as well. I normally get at-least one specialty roll to see if the chefs actually know their stuff and so i ordered the crunchy roll. This was a very tasty choice. It is shrimp tempura with avocado and something else in rice paper rolled in tempura crumbs. It was just slightly warm when it was served and that made it PERFECT. A bit on the pricey side at $9, but i didn't spend more than i normally do at a sushi place. I also got some yellow tail nigiri and it wasn't the freshest it could be but it was not bad. But the fish has to be extremely fresh for me to really like the nigiri. I am talking they bought the fish at the market on the wharf that morning, cleaned the fish that day, and served it that evening fresh. There is only one place that i know that has fish that tastes this fresh and thats in orange county. So i am very very picky about my nigiri. My only real complaint was the wait staff. The waiter came and took my drink order and i ordered directly from the sushi chef and he never came back around to offer me any refills. I had to ask the chef to ask the waiter to bring me some more green tea (which had a hint of mango, very good). When i asked for my check the waiter gave me the wrong bill. The chef made a quiet joke to me about the waiter so i guess the wait staff is a normal problem at the restaurant. Because of the service from the staff other than the chef i would like to give this place only 3.5 stars but i will round up because i was so pleased with the food and to me the food is the main event when going out.

What a disappointment! I watched Koda take over the space in Sunset Junction and I was really excited to have a nice sushi restaraunt in the neighborhood. The night we went to check it out, we were even pleasantly surprised by the choices on the menu and the price was very reasonable. All the pieces were in place for this to be my new sushi joint - then I had to endure the service. We came in at a normal LA dinner time around 8:30 pm and there were only 4 or 5 other tables being served. It took 10 minutes to just get a menu and another 5 to get water. I'm definitely patient at a restaraunt because I'm usually focused on hanging out, talking and enjoying the atmosphere but I'm not exaggerating that it took 20 minutes before the server asked to take our order. As I was telling her what we wanted she wasn't even paying attention. Then after acting like we were an annoyance she said the kitchen was closed and we could only order sushi. I've only done this one other time in my life but I told her to forget it and we left. I'd like to try it again but only after I read a lot of reviews that the service is adequate.

LONG wait (1 1/2 hours for 5 plates of sushi when the place was 1/4 full), Average sushi, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME

Came here for lunch. Our waitress was very nice! Unfortunately the food blows. Well, at least the $4 apps were kinda gross. I know good food, son, and this ain't it. Barely Japanese..

I just visited Koda for the first time, Monday at about 8:30 pm. I think it was the wrong time to go -- as soon as we walked in, we were hit by the very intense smell of bleach, and it was very warm and humid inside, which magnified it. It was kind of slow and probably getting toward closing time, so they must have started cleaning already. The aesthetics of the place were pleasant, but there was a very loud roar the whole time we were there, which I think must've been the cooler. It sounded like a swarm of cicadas were in the room. I speak on the quiet side, so when I ordered, it turned out I was no match for the noise -- the waitress heard something totally different than what I ordered. I'm veggie, but ended up with some sort of salmon gel. She was perfectly happy to fix the order though, and charged me for the cheaper salmon thing. She was a good and friendly waitress. The miso soup arrived just a step above room temperature, but tasted good. They have a good selection of veggie rolls -- maybe five or six. I got "The Hermit" and "The Hippy" and they were both good. They also have some veggie appetizers and salads, so there are plenty of options. I think my boyfriend had the spicy tuna and the yellow fin. The tuna was fine (but not great), but he started making gagging faces on the yellow fin and I think he was just concentrating on swallowing it to be done with it. The owner creep everyone mentions was indeed sitting at the end of the bar on his laptop, but I was facing away from him so I wasn't bothered by it. I may go back, but only for happy hour.

NAS-TY! After completing our meal - which was mediocre - a giant roach sauntered directly across the middle of our table. I screeched, my boyfriend backed up a bit and of course the waitress ran over. And here comes the owner........"Was that a roach?" Duh. "Oh, that happens when you sit near the window, I am so sorry". No offer to comp our meal, no offer of drinks or dessert. Not that I wanted to eat more- but REALLY! We will NEVER return. Roaches on the table and an inconsiderate owner is enough to keep that place empty.

I fell in love with Koda during my first visit in June 2006. The sushi was fresh, creative, and delicious. I was there with a large group and remember tossing little chunks of spicy deliciousness in my mouth as plates were passed around the table. It was gooood. I also recall going on and on about the salmon melting in my mouth like butter. The ambiance was right up my alley. Laid back, great music, friendly service. They also had a great selection of vegetarian dishes to choose from. The prices were a bit steep, but that seems to be standard practice in Silverlake. Fast forward to December 2006. Totally different menu. It threw me for a loop! Aren't they too new to be changing things around? Well, I bit my tongue and sucked it up. Despite the changes, the food was still delicious and fresh and sent me on my way feeling totally satisfied. I'm sure Koda is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood (I don't live in LA, but if I did, I'd be a regular at Koda for sure).

Don't think sushi restaurants do well in Silverlake. Too bad. Never have to wait for a table. Sushi good---like the Maui roll.

The $4 all day happy hour has me coming back every time. The sushi tastes good and is presented well. There are a good selection of items on the $4 menu and worth going in to try.

this was my first time at koda. was on sort of a date sort of speak and showed up just in time for happy hour. i was expecting to spend an arm and leg but the happy hour prices were pretty decent. $4 menu, awesome. koda accommodates us vegetarian peeps with a decent selection of vegi friendly rolls. 4 rolls, 2 bottles of sake, 5 beers, roughly 50 bucks. overall this joint isn't too shabby. i would definitely return for happy hour.

My husband and I have been enjoying Koda for about a year now and we really like Richard - A LOT!! He is smart, quirky and reminds us of someone you would meet in NYC. I wish more people would stop being so judgmental and chill out. Being different and unique does not mean you are "creepy". Our experience with the food has been tasty and totally affordable.

Big fan of the happy hour menu, and their specialty rolls are delicious too. Can't say I've been their when the j-porn is on, but they've always projected nice things when I was there along with a live musician strumming on his guitar. I typically go there when I have time to spare, but I always felt taken care of service wise. Overall, I've always been impressed with the delicious and appropriately priced food, pleasant atmosphere and friendly waitstaff. Never left not wanting to come back!

Tasty sushi and appetizer items (the mushroom dish we had was great). As others have said, it's a bit pricey, but good sushi is pricey, so we expected it and just enjoyed. The knock from me here is not the price, but the service. Our waitress didn't quite get our orders right (we asked for a series of sashimi items that turned into Nigiri), but that would be easy for the owner ( a friendly fellow sitting at the end of the bar) to improve. In the end, they surprised us with a complimentary dessert, probably to offset the error in the order-taking (we mentioned it only after we had eaten most of the Nigiri - the fish was quite good).

This is one of those hit or miss kind of a places. They have a great happy hour, daily. They have a $4 menu, which is quite extensive, however, my only advice, stay away from the sushi. The rolls aren't bad, but the are really basic. For $4 you get rice and fish. However, the 3 shrooms appetizer...YUM. 2 orders were necessary on that one. They also have hiyayako on the menu, which is not very common. I'd say all of the appetizers we got were yummy. We also had the shrimp grenades, nasty. Although true to the name, these things did explode all over the place when i bite into them, an explosion of too much spicy mayonnaise is not desired. Too much mayo, not enough shrimp. The eggplant with miso glaze was also good, slightly on the sweet side, but good non-the-less. Now time to talk about the service. Not exactly good, or even close. Our server seem lost and confused, even though there were only 3 parties in the entire restaurant. Even the sushi chef was annoyed with our server :( I liked that they had been on tap, that's always a bonus. This is one of those places where, if you know what to order you will enjoy your food. The prices are decent, but i would expect great service here. So my advice, go here a few times, try a bunch of different things, and don't expect great things from the servers.

I am giving this restaurant five stars because they were very nice about my husband and I bringing our nine month old baby in for lunch. Our tiny, inquisitive boy managed to grab and spill an entire ceramic container of soy sauce on himself and the surrounding area. The hostess/waitress helped us mop it up and brought over paper napkins so we could try to pat him dry. She smiled about the whole thing, as did the guitar player on the other side of the room, who remarked, "I remember when my daughter was that small." My husband and I stopped off for lunch at Koda after going to the farmer's market. We had to wander around for a few minutes while killing time until 1pm, but that's not a problem in that part of Silverlake. We ordered off the happy hour menu, which also applies to weekend lunches. The rolls were basic and tasty - my shrimp and asparagus, and spicy tuna, were both enjoyable, especially at $4 apiece! We also had the sweet potato fries (made from sweet potatoes, which are yellow, NOT yams, which are orange), which came with what looked like ranch - but was actually a delicious citrus mayonnaise. Our little guy loved the fries, and happily chewed on them. We also had the miso eggplant, which was in a sauce that had more sugar in it than miso. Still, the eggplant itself was perfectly cooked, and I was able to feed my baby several little pieces, which he enjoyed. My husband also thoroughly enjoyed his hand grenade sushi - baked shrimp with spicy sauce - and since he is not a big sushi fan, it must have been good. I really liked Koda. I can't figure out why there weren't more people coming in for a post-market lunch. The total bill, with tax, for six small plates, my tea and my husband's Coke, was $31. And they have a high chair, AND indulge those of us who insist on bringing our children into less family-oriented restaurants. I'm delighted with them.

The sushi here was good, don't get me wrong! Just not worth the price... If you can spend some cash, it would make for a nice night out. I just was so hungry when I left. They do have interesting vegetarian sushi. I like fun, bang for your buck little secrets. Not status eats. For the record: I am poor not cheap.

I have not been to this place for almost a year now. I thought I would give it another try being that I was in the area. It took only a few minutes for me to remember why I stopped coming here the first time! The service was good but the owner is a DOUCHE! As usual....sitting at the counter with his laptop, talking too loud than moving on to hit on a customer.....asking if he could buy her a drink....TACKY! WHATEVER! I can get past all of that! What REALLY REALLY MADE through me into a tailspin WAS THAT HE HAD LEFT HIS ELDERLY DOG OUTSIDE IN 95 PLUS DEGREE WEATHER ON THE SIDEWALK WITH AN EMPTY TO-GO CONTAINER (IM ASSUMING THIS WAS HIS PATHETIC ATTEMPT TO WATER THIS POOR DOG). I asked the server whose dog this was...just to confirm my thoughts. It was his. I checked one more time and 50 minutes after arriving STILL NO WATER! I asked the server for some water. Went outside to refill the "water bowl" made sure I made eye contact with the owner the entire time...AND NOTHING.....don't eat here. Do not support this establishment!

Awful, honestly, even the $4 sushi specials are NOT worth the bother. Tried it twice, just to be fair. First time we stood by the door for 5 minutes waiting to be seated, were never acknowledged (and it's a small place), and finally seated ourselves. Then another 5-10 minutes passed before anyone brought water or menus. The sushi that time did not strike me as particularly bad...BUT the standout event was the cockroach scuttling around at our feet. I kid you not....I saw another one in the bathroom. Even after this, I RETURNED a few weeks later (I'm pretty forgiving) to try again, this time for the weekend afternoon "special" menu. The rolls were just plain awful, chewy/crunchy rice and soggy, mushy fish. Not even worth the $4 special price. Yuck...will never go back. Too bad, it's in a great spot and looks kinda cool from the outside, but don't bother.

My boyfriend and I come here for happy hour and I love it! The service is awesome and the food tastes fresh. There's nothing better than getting full off of ten bucks when the food is tasty too! The veggie tempura roll is delicious as well as their iced green tea its some of the best I' ve had here.

Love the food. LOVE it. The sushi is simple and delish def. - but the service...as others here have said - is "eh". The servers try hard, but on a weekend night they are understaffed (one or two servers for a full house) and they don't notice you even if you have your flipping hand raised. Almost like they have blinders on because they have to do one thing at a time because they are so overworked. I feel for them. And, like I said, the sushi is great and local - yay. The owner is there all the time - just chillin' with his omni-present glass of wine and his computer. He could step in once in a while and clear a table or something, but, you know - he doesn't. Whatevs. Guess that is the luxury of being a boss. But if it was my place, I'd step it up.

We were driving around and going to get sushi. My friend suggested going here as we drove past Koda. Not having eating all day, I flipped a U, and here we were. I didn't really care what we ordered, but I wanted to order quickly since I was starving, as I hadn't eaten all day... A couple of the appetizers stood out from the rest. We tried the Shrimp Balls and the Sashito Peppers. I don't even know what Sashito Peppers are but it sounded interesting from what I read on the menu. The shrimp balls were suppose to have a coconutty flavor, and I though they did, but my friend didn't seem to taste it. I am a bit reluctant to try sashimi or nigiri the first time at a resturant, so we ordered up a few rolls instead. The Rock Lobster Roll, the Charlettes Web, and the Crunchy roll. I forgot what was in each...but the lobster roll contained, duh...lobster, and the crunchy roll had lobster too....they forgot the orange fish eggs on one of the rolls. But overall the rolls were nothing special. They weren't god awful or anything, but nothing exciting. Service was ok, nice colors in the bathroom, which btw was out of paper towels. Next time, I'll probably pass on Koda.

Never been intrigued to write a yelp review until tonight...So as we are sitting down waiting for our waiter to come take our order, we notice we are being approached by what appeared to be a drunk and crazy homeless person. As he is looking my bf in the eye and about a foot away from his face, he proceeds to ask him if he was american. In shock, he replies, "yes, are YOU"?! He says yes and takes a few stumbled steps away just before he turns back around, comes back to the table and says, "howd you get like that?" and motions to his arms/chest. My bf nicely replies and says, "because i work out". So he says, "oh, ok" and then turns and leaves the table. 5 minutes later he approaches our table again and throws down a twenty dollar bill and persistently asks to arm wrestle him, but only if he could use both hands. He then decides to take a seat and proceeds to tell us that he has so many band aids on his arms because he just fell off of a horse AND as he fell off, his "penis" (literally - no joke) got all messed up because it some how got caught in the zipper of his pants when he fell. As we running out the door to leave, he tried to grab/bend my bf's arm and trip him at the same time (which was clearly quite the challenge for this man) and then proceeds to say "Im just trying to have a good time, dont go try and sue me now"..REALLY!??? This man turns out to be the owner of the restaurant

My girlfriend and I go to Koda for one thing: spicy tuna crispy rice. Unfortunately, the rest of the food at Koda consistently disappoints. Most unfortunate is that the rolls ALWAYS fall apart. I have yet to have a meal at Koda where at least one roll didn't unhinged prior to reaching the table. It's bush league and it pisses me off. I might forgive Koda's mediocrity if not for its aspirational prices. Koda and I are not friends.

Visited a couple times and the food is inexpensive but lately it hasn't looked or tasted the freshest. The staff is always less than engaged. The recent debacle that included a pair of cockroaches crawling across the table closed the lid on Koda for us.

Koda always seems pretty empty, so I go there when I've got a sushi yen and the waits at other local restaurants are too long. It's reliably decent sushi -- nothing extraordinary, but if you just want a nice meal and some sake in a decent atmosphere, it fits the bill.

A Gem in Silverlake, finally a sushi bar to call our own. Great happy hour selection for $4, beer and sake too. Some favorites: Fusion salmon roll, jarkarta, and Chiliean Sea Bass.

Sushi on the eastside? uhh? what's that you say? Yes believe it or not there is actually a fun new hip sushi restaurant in silverlake that is actually good. I am not one of those sushi eaters that is there just for the raw fish. I don't eat sea urchin or the heads off shrimp. I like the creative rolls and appetizers of the neo sushi restaurants ala sushi roku and koi. While Koda isnt as good as the latter it sure is the best in this area. And is half the price of the others! This place has an amazing atmosphere and a great back patio. The servers are nice and "hip" and the food is fun. Unagi sushi with white chocolate and almonds! Wow I have never seen or heard of anything like that but when you tasted it, it made sense!. The Ginger Scallion crispy rice cakes are better than french fries or tortilla chips! The reason i didnt give this place 4 stars was because while i think the rolls and sushi is inventive they are a little "samey" half the sushi specials have either mango or some sort of nuts in them. That doesnt always work. Nevertheless I definitely reccommend this place!

Food was fine. The service was really, really bad. Took over an hour to get 4 rolls and some soup. Also there's random movies playing on a big screen TV and a projection screen. March of the penguins. And some old western. So bizarre. PS, I'm still waiting on food as I type this.

Giving 4 stars for their awesome happy hour. We went before 7pm and I think dinner cost us $30 for two beers, 3 rolls, edamame and seaweed salad. Can't beat that. Outside of happy hour, I imagine it'll just feel like a pretty average local sushi spot.

  • Britt P.

I knew there would be other reviews about the owner! Hahaha. Okay, I have been to Koda several times. The food is good, though sushi snobs probably won't be satisfied. The Lunch/Happy Hour menu with $4 apps/rolls/salads really can't be beaten. How else are you going to get full from sushi? Service has always been just fine for me and the sushi chefs are extremely nice. Granted I don't go during rush hour, but I've never had major problems. But back to the owner: My first visit, we noticed a grey-haired, drunk man hunched over a laptop (it was around 4:30 p.m.) He looks like a Beverly Hills nightmare out of Escaped to L.A. You know, the plastic surgery victims? Huge fake lips. His shirt was open and I wondered to myself, "Is it possible to have track marks on your chest?" It was gross and Erin and I wondered why they would let a patron like that hang out and scare away the customers. The next time I went he was a little out of it, but stayed put with his beer instead of tottering around and leering at the customers per usual. This time, I thought he was the accountant. Today, Erin voiced her idea that he might be the owner and everything sort of made sense. And today he was the loudest. He came over to our table and stood so close his belly was actually touching the table edge. He waved mail around and I feared for a paper cut on my cornea. Erin was polite and he wandered away within 30 seconds. A man in a military uniform came in and the owned pounced, "See this picture here. That's my asshole of a father! That's my best friends dad. They got uniforms here. He was a senior, senior, senior, higher up, senior, senior, senior, senior (at least 100 times)..." Then another couple came in. I looked over just as the owner was gesturing he wanted to toss something at the man. He got up to take it, but the owner tossed it anyway. Me: "Erin! Is that a knife?!" Dude: "Um, is this a knife?" Owner: "Heh heh. Keep it." Me: "Oh God."

I was surprised to see all of the horrible reviews for this place... I've been here 3 times with my boyfriend and have never had a disastrous encounter like some of the other Yelpers. RE: Service: We've never had a bad waiter/waitress - were always told immediately to seat ourselves (we have a regular spot at the bar that we like) and never had to wait very long. Also, my boyfriend was unsure about ordering something new, and the waiter specifically offered that if he didn't like it he would switch it with something else for free. Plus, the chef offered to take our order when he noticed we were ready and the waitor wasn't around. The only time we've had to wait long was last night, the 3rd time we've been, because there was only one chef making sushi for about 6 - 7 tables... and he never stopped working while we were sitting there... RE: the Food: AWESOME. Only the special rolls are $10 - 12... the regular rolls (which are still really great and decent sizes) are about $5 - 8, which is completely average for sushi. They also offer a TON of veggie options for rolls. The $10 sake is great cold and warm; we get it every time. Honestly, if you're not prepared to pay about $6-7 per roll, the quality will suffer... if we're feeling cheap but still want sushi, we'll hit Tosa Express on Hillhurst... (See my other review). RE: atmosphere: they usually have some strange old movie playing on the enormous screen on the wall, which can be fun if you're there for a casual dinner... if you want a more intimate setting, this place isn't exactly a romantic spot, but we like it :) Never been there during Happy Hour, so can't help you there. I DID notice the creepy owner last time I went, but he never talked to us, and I didn't see him talking to anyone else either.

Let me preface this by saying this place should be evaluated on two levels: 1) Service and 2) Value and quality of food for the money. Service: Despite the horror story reviews I read below about the service, I decided to see for myself if this establishment's service was really that bad. I'm sorry to say that it was. While the food was well priced and the overall quality of the food was above average, the poor service could not be ignored. Essentially, we were served well after other customers who walked in after us and it took at least 30 minutes to get any food (including edamame-which is downright pathetic) delivered to our table. Moreover, the food orders were delivered piecemeal instead of all together and I had to repeatedly ask the waiter and owner about when our food would be delivered to our table. Lastly, rather than clearing our empty serving plates as more sushi orders arrived, they just kept jamming more sushi dishes onto what little table space was available. Food: For the money and above average quality, it would be hard to beat this place. While the sushi is not the best I've had, it was consistently good and the even the rolls menu was somewhat imaginative. When you factor in that this place promotes with various "Groupon" type offers, the net cost of the food is a downright steal. Conclusion: If you are a cost-conscious sushi patron willing to wait a long-ass time for the food and are willing to put up with lousy service, then this is your place for sushi.

My wonderful friend, Malena D., wanted to go to grab some sushi while we were over at TantraZ next door for the YEE. It sounded good at the time. I was buzzed and tired. this a bad mix for me. It makes me sleeeeeeeeepy. I ordered some food that my drunken self found delicious. I ate it down, and loved it. The staff were really friendly and Japanese. Whether they were great sushi chefs was a little difficult to determine since I was a) starving and b) was trying to make sure I didn't throw up from the previously imbibed alcohol. The next thing I knew, Malena was nudging me to go home. I had fallen asleep for 10-15 minutes. Wow. The caring staff was very concerned with my safety. Yes, i'm fine, I do this all the time, unfortunately. I seem to have alcohol-induced narcolepsy...

this is the neighborhood joint. we go here if we want fast and cheap sushi. today wasn't the case, sushi chef must be new because the server was telling the chef how to sauce a plate. chef was extremely behind so we just paid for our drinks and walked out. we were the 2nd group to do that to them. this place could have so much potential too! ps the old man, possibly is the owner, is creepy!!

When I moved to this area, this is one of the first restaurants I went to and had dinner with some friends. I keep telling people about this place and they still cant believe me - $4 (good selection) of sushi and ($4)all their beers on draft! Happy Hour lasts from 12-7 every single day! AAand they give you 8 pieces of sushi for $4. How can anyone beat that? Its freakin crazy awesome. This place always has great service...sometimes you have to nudge the waitress if your sitting outside to come grab your order...but overall a very great place to relax...have an Anchor Steam and enjoy some delicious Philadelphia Rolls. I highly recommend this place!

We ate here on a Wednesday night. Pros: - Parking in back if you're not carrying any change for the meters - Quality and texture of the fish was buttery-melt-in-your-mouth amazing - Quick to take our order Cons: - Service is ridiculously slow partly due inadequate staffing ( they only have one sushi maker for the entire restaurant). We actually thought they forgot our last sushi order because it took them awhile to get it out! - Lack of attentiveness by wait staff. We were eating in the dark for maybe 20 min before the lights came on and a candle was brought to our table. - Waiter didn't introduce the names of the dishes as he put them on our table. It would've been nice to know what we were eating. This is a great place if you have time to hang-out all night because the sushi comes out slow. The quality of the fish is pretty good too. If they hired another sushi maker, this place might be worth returning.

The owner/ proprietor was kind enough to send an email asking how they can improve. Unfortunately, the email disappeared from my inbox so I couldn't respond. 3.5 stars for the good customer service... and in hindsight, I tried a piece of my friend's sushi and it was super duper fresh! Will try again with different menu items and update soon!

I can't give Koda 1-Star because I have been satisfied with their food. And although I haven't experienced the horrifying stories of Richard, I can see where that comes from. I've only been there a few times, and yes I liked the food, service was - eh. Only one guy serving everyone with a half-ass attitude and from time to time would forget to bring water or remember one of the items of my order, but oh well. My friend seems to get along with the owner, but to me, I find him very odd and to be quite frank, useless, because I never see him "working," but rather sipping on wine and watch tv. So much for management skills. Then one time, the server went MIA, so we tried to pay the bill with the owner, and he backs up and says: "Whoa, I don't handle (touch) money" like its taboo or bad luck... I found that incredibly strange... like dude, you run this restaurant, take the damn money so you can pay your bills and so I can get outta here! I can't lie, $4 happy hour sushi is not bad. So I'm at a loss.

Yuck. I'm actually ashamed to be the Duchess of this place (and I have been here more than 3 times). Please, someone else claim this title for me... I used to really like coming here: fast, friendly service; funny and personable sushi chef who remembered me and my boyfriend and made jokes to us across the restaurant; yummy and interesting sushi; awesome happy hour. What happened?? The owner is a total drunk creepo who marinates in wine and does pirouettes at the bar (seriously). Justin M's review where he describes the owner yelling "cocksucker, I'll kill you" is true. Scary. The old, awesome sushi chef was replaced with some mediocre dude and now my sushi always falls apart before it even gets to my mouth.:( (PS: old sushi chef, where do you work now!? We'll follow you!) The old servers were replaced with inattentive people who I constantly have to GET UP AND FIND to ask for more water, my bill, etc. The only constant server is the surly guy who works at night and always seems irritated that I'm choosing to dine here. Well, surly guy, don't worry. I will NEVER come here again.

Wow. How sad.. Long story short, I'm not surprised in all the negative feedback. Koda had alot of potential when it opened for the first year, but the owner didn't give it enough room to spread its wings... It's a shame. As a former employee of this restaurant, Richard- the owner- manages to take the cake in bad bosses. I began working here when it first opened. I had a nice crew of co-workers. We all got along and the patrons seemed to like us. But I see that not much has changed with Richard and his verbal and physical abuse has not ceased. We, the original crew, faded within the first year. It's a big sign when all 3 sushi chefs quit at the same time. I could tell you ALOT of unsavory stories about the management of this place. I'm not one to try and speak negatively, but after all these years, Richard really needs to have action taken against him. I'm curious, has anything been done about his behavior?

i went with my bf and his brother to look for chef Rex. and it was a blast time there. i used to only likes few kinds of sushi but on that day every thing the chef served was perfect and so tasty!!!!!!! Even my bf who doesnt like a raw fish, he liked it so much too!!! i will definitely come back and it was worth money and time to visit there :D Thanks to chef rex who served great plates to us and ...oh, servers were a bit slow but they were not that bad like people wrote.

Moving right along with bad reviews, I keep the trend going with Koda. This place USE to be okay in my book. The OLD sushi chef was a funny, great guy, as well as EXCELLENT sushi chef. But apparently the drunk ass owner didn't think so anymore. The only time worth WASTING YOUR MONEY HERE, is weekends, during their happy hour. Which is decently priced. Last week I was in here eating on a week night, and the wait staff was the same prick who never asks how I am doing, and some new girl who kept second guessing everything she did, but she was nice. The owner though....he is a complete...well piece of work is a nice way to write this review. As I am paying and remotely getting aggravated for waiting ten minutes for the bill, I started voicing my opinion that I probably would never come back to my Woman, my partner in crime. And next thing I start hearing from the drunk old man, dancing watching the basketball game and pouring down the wine, is this...and please do not flag for this was exactly what he was saying across the restaurant, and for why, I do not know: "Cocksucker. You are a cocksucker. You should die. I will kill you in your sleep." And I stare at him after this, cause it appeared he was saying it in my direction, then tried to make it towards the Lakers game (go lakers!) So just a short review for this place, take the management out of the picture and it could succeed, but for now, it will just be another shithole of Silverlake.

Not from the area, so I've only been here twice, once last year and once last month. Both times I sat at the sushi bar and got great service, and very good rolls and sushi. They had interesting and somewhat bizarre art films playing on the wall; one of them showed fairly explicit sex, another was quite gory, so leave the kids at home. I liked them, weird as they were. The chef was very personable and made conversation while we tried a few of his unusual rolls. I was not too fond of the soba, but I've tried it elsewhere and not cared for it, so my judgment isn't good there. It had lots of funky Asian veggies, if you like that. You can get an enormous amount of sushi and sake for cheap during happy hour. Definitely try to get there then if you can. Having not been here when the owner was, I've only had good experiences here. Visits: 2

Got the tofu salad with wasabi dressing on the side. Good thing I did because wowza. What a kick! Also got the veggie tempura roll. Was crunchy and ok. I probably should have gotten a raw one, but oh well. Service was very friendly, but I don't think I'll go out of my way to go back.

After writing my review, I received a nice email from the owner regarding my experience. Thank you for taking the time, and I am aware that mistakes can happen, especially for a new business.

Pretty delicious meal here last night, it was a cold slow Thursday night and we wandered around the Silver Lake strip for a while and ended up at Koda. Saki, Kirin and the 3shroom medley started us off and it was fantastic. Ended up with 2 rolls both of which were amazing (both spicy options on the menu). Great vibe, fun times and hey its right down the road so that rocks. Good saki selection as well!

Rolls are very small. Definitely not the greatest sushi I've had. Overpriced.

The food was good, but the service was awful. They have some unique rolls, most of which were pretty good. I especially enjoyed the Fever (spicy salmon and avocado on tuffs of rice with soy bean paper) and Hand Grenades (baked shrimp sushi topped with dynamite sauce). Still, nothing can make up for the AWFUL, HORRIBLE, LOUSY service. Like, really. We (a group of 4) got there between 7:45 and 8:00 on Saturday night, and the place was practically empty. There was a couple at another table and maybe one or two people at the sushi bar. We put our order in (tempura as an appetizer and then a bunch of rolls). When we were done with our first round, we were still hungry. That was at 8:45. We placed another (really simple) order shortly thereafter. We sat for at least 40 minutes before the food arrived. After we were done, it took 20 minutes to process our credit cards. The owner (who, based on what I've read, just sits at the bar and drinks wine all night) did nothing to help the wait staff. Worthless. If you have a lot of time to kill and want decent sushi, this place is fine. If you care about your time, DO NOT COME HERE.

Great vegetarian sushi! I've been to many sushi restaurants, but never seen one with so many excellent vegetarian rolls! The hippy roll is my absolute favorite, though I can strongly recommend ANY of the others, like the plain veggie or veggie tempura (and the others of which I can't remember the names). They have some excellent appetizers like the sauteed mushrooms and the crispy and sweet satsuma fries. I really don't understand any of the negative reviews on here; we've probably been here 20 times and never had any of the negative experiences that others seem to have had here. I have to chalk it up to hipster snobbiness. When we were there a few nights ago, they had the Masters of the Universe movie, followed by Barbarella, playing on the projector. We've been there a few times when they've had Rocky Horror Picture Show playing. They don't have the sound playing, mind you; the soundtrack is replaced instead by cheesy mid to late-2000s dance-pop; but it's kind of a perfect mix.

Ok, so, around here we aren't swimming in sushi place choices like on the West side. That being said, I will probably still have to go to Koda when Saito is too busy to make my takeout order. The sushi is fine, I do enjoy it, it's an okay price. It's just I was sitting at the bar waiting for my takeout order once and the owner happened to be sitting right next to me working out a scheduling issue with one of the servers. I overheard (if you could call it that, the man was less than a foot away from me and speaking loudly) him telling the server to call "one of the other skanks" that works there to cover someone's shift. Why he chose that particular phrasing right in front of a female customer, I don't know. So my umbridge with this place is its owner. I might be being hoity-toity about this but I don't like hearing waitresses called skanks, it's a hard job and a misogynist boss doesn't make it any easier. Ladies who work at Koda, you have my sympathies.

My fiance and I had lunch, sat outside, and had a fabulous time: ) The waitress seamed sweet and was very attentive! Great Service! The happy hour prices just can't be beat! We had Oyster Shooters for an appetizer. They were fantastic and cheap! The sushi isn't the absolute best, but hay for $4 bucks it does the trick:) I had such a great time I was sad to see all the bad reviews. The owner wasn't there when we went, and I am really glad. I don't think I would have had such great things to say. Maybe he should just stay home and drink, and let this place succeed?! That seems to be safer for drivers, and the staff too!

There is nothing like real people with unique personalities to give good food and a nice place character and a sense of fun! The owner at Koda is accessible and genuine. Make sure to say hello if he is there when you are. My maguro was a good color, a great texture and very fresh. The spinach, peppers and cucumbers were just the way I like them. I think next time I would ask for my oyster shooters first and spicy not sweet. I've driven by for months and finally went in. Glad I did! My date enjoyed it

I like the sushi and the sushi chefs behind the counter seem lovely but I've had several incredibly awkward experiences there. The short guy with the red hair (owner? manager?) sits at the counter, drinks steadily, staggers back to the beer taps for a refill, and gropes his clearly uncomfortable female waitstaff every time I've seen him. Once, he actually stopped the server in her tracks as she was passing by with a tray full of drinks. He started rubbing her back and belly until she put the tray down to push him gently away. He kind of swayed in place for a few seconds, then stumbled back to his bar stool. It was awful. I hope someone that can do something about it reads this and helps those kids and/or gets rid of that guy.

I could write a ode nay a sonnet about all the things wrong with this place. No matter what the Happy Hour menu offer DON"T BE TEMPTED. In fact run! IF Vons had a frozen sushi section that you could take home and thaw out and eat off a paper plate it would be better than the food here. Don't let me get started on the service or I may write a whole albums worth! Consider yourselves told!

Wow, I had some expectations for Koda. Maybe that was the downfall of it. We came there late, after the dinner rush and wanted to just take a stab at their appetizers and drinks. Busting out the Livingsocial voucher, we had a rag tag sampling of sake, edamame, mushrooms, raw oysters, and an odd viewing of some black and while movie that was borderline pornographic. It was so outlandish that it added to the mood and was, disappointing, the highlight of the place. The food was nothing to brag about, pretty average. Something to hit the spot but not something you'd ever crave. The service was terrible. You'd think by the end of the night things should move pretty fast. One of the servers was great, the other was just lackluster and annoyed. They gave us complimentary edamame, only because they forgot about it. I love the environment though, chill atmosphere, weird vintage black and white movies on screen, and situated in a nifty part of the city. The weirdness works. Food: 2.5 Service: 1.5 Mood: 4 I may go back one more time just to give it an extra shot, I really want to enjoy this place, it's just not gelling.

I want to like Koda, I do, I really do! I even gave it like FIVE chances, but every time it failed. First off, I want to say, that though I am a sushi lover and some may say a sushi snob, I can appreciate a jazzed up slightly americanized sushi bar for what it is. Sometimes they can be fun and a good place to take people who are not so into the sushi as they are into the novelty of having Japanese food or into the atmosphere or whatever... But Koda feels like it's aiming for that mark and then misses-- by a long shot. Not a single Japanese sushi chef behind the counter. Very limited options on the menu, half of which are SUPER americanized... I'm talking cream cheese in your sushi... yeah, you heard me, CREAM CHEESE + SUSHI... GROSS. Loud clubby music, though we're at least 15 minutes from Hollywood & Highland. And the sushi itself is flavorless. And I mean even the Spicy Tuna, which is kind of hard to fuck up, tasted like nothing. It's not that the sushi is bad like it tastes weird, it just doesn't taste at all! Strange, I know. Never had that experience before. I wanted to like Koda since it's walking distance from me and how great would it be to have a decent neighborhood sushi joint to walk to. But, alas, Koda just aint it.

Food was great - service even better. 1 stars as the owner of the place found it necessary to berate my server from his comfortable post at the bar (why are you there taking up space?). He was cursing and nasty - borderline nutso over something trivial not having to do with work. He obviously had no consideration for his customers enjoying a nice ambiance, so I refuse to return and give him any more of my money. P.S. Rochelle (I think that was her name) knew the product, made excellent suggestions and was super sweet - AND I was using a Livingsocal coupon...find a new gig, girl.

It was sushi, no more, no less. The speciality rolls sounded better on the menu than were actually executed and the service was slow and painfully unknowledgeable. The girl didn't know anything about anything; the food, the saki, the number of pieces in the rolls.... I'll only go here when visiting friends in the neighborhood and they suggest it. Otherwise, there is a reason it was 3 years between visits.

The staff here was hard to beat. It just does not get better than this place...The first time I encountered Koda was on a 'first date', just minutes before they were about to close. I was so happy that were allowed to dine- the night ended with complimentary fresh yellowtail and rounds of saki bombs with the ENTIRE staff. Talk about a warm welcome. My 'first date' and I have been together ever since (2yrs now)... Every time I come in Andrew is always happy to greet me no matter how long I've gone without stopping in. Which is always too long!

***CAJUN ROLL*** Tried the Cajun Roll for the first time and just about died and went to Cajun heaven, flavorful and sexy-spicy! I've been to Koda three times within the last couple of weeks and I'm always pleased. 1. Very well priced sushi and they have a $4 happy hour menu. 2. THE CAJUN ROLL & The Citrus Roll ;) 3. A bizarre movie is always playing, and or a game if you're not into the movie. 4. Interesting crowd. (To elaborate later.) 5. The music. I don't know of any other sushi place that blast Siouxie and the Banshees while I'm sipping my beer having my ears burn with spicy pleasure all simultaneously stimulated with visuals. 6. The eye candy and the not so eye candy. The crowd here is very random. My girlfriend and I love to come here and people watch. Sometimes a cute boy will sit alone at the sushi bar and we'll take turns getting a glance. OR sometimes there's the odd couple that shows up and you can tell they're on the "pre-fooling around" dinner date. 7. Outdoor patio in the back of the restaurant. 8. Have I mentioned the fact that the owner invented the "Sushi Hand Roll Dance"? I SWEAR! 9. PARKING IN THE REAR********************************************

I have never been to a sushi place where they do not carry most fish on the menu are you kidding me... I'm at koda as I write this been here for 1hour and ordered only 2 rolls...they just got here and man they skimp there rolls... Taste okay, but this place makes sushi mac look good...i know you get what you pay for, but 5 bucks for a skimpy roll there rolls are priced at 6 bucks so you get $1 off for happy hour.... I will take my business elsewhere i will never eat here again...

I've been to this place at least 10 times in the 5 months since I found it. The sushi is pretty decent, but I mostly come because of their almost-everything-for-$4 happy hour, which conveniently runs every day until 7pm. While I've never been dissatisfied with the quality of the food given the price, I don't know that I'd come here during their full price hours. Last time I ate at Koda, just a few days ago, I had a strange and slightly unpleasant experience that was unlike any other time I'd been before. I was seated by the man that I presume to be the owner. There is something a bit sketchy about him; he wasn't friendly and his mannerisms were quite off-putting. The poor service continued with our server, who took over 45 minutes to deliver our 5 sushi rolls, and completely ignored our table in the meantime, messing up our order twice, and giving no apology, either for the delay or mistakes. My party had eventually moved indoors since we were being ignored at the sidewalk tables, and inside, we discovered that softcore porn was inexplicably being played on the large projection screen television, which featured a lesbian couple finger-banging each other up against a refrigerator. Now, I'm not a prude, but I don't really need to be watching finger-banging while eating sushi, and the awkwardness was exacerbated by the fact that my dining partner was my brother. After reading other reviews, I'm a little worried about Koda. I will certainly be back, because I have yet to find other affordable, decent-tasting sushi in the area, but I hope in the meantime I'm not stricken with food poisoning, or involved in some crazy throw-down when the unstable owner eventually loses it.

I don't know what everyone is so butt-hurt about this place. I ate there at 7:30 on a Thursday, was sat right away. The waitress greeted us withing 5 minutes, took a drink order, brought it withing another few minutes. Took our dinner order and we were eating withing 15 minutes. The sushi was good, HUGE fan of the Cajun Roll. The 3 Shrooms appetizer was amazing... AND they were playing He-Man (the movie) on the giant projector. What is not to like about this place? I even was paying with a living social deal coupon, and they didn't act all upset about it. They even gave us a frequent diner card (it's on the other side of town, so probably wont go that often). But if you are looking for decent prices and slightly above average sushi, check this place out!

I used to love Koda. Close to me, decent sushi, cheap hot sake at happy hour. Then I met the owner... He always seemed off to me, but he outdid himself about one week ago: they had some live music playing and a few people started coming in to listed. I guess not everyone was eating and drinking. At some point, the lights go out and the owner comes out yelling at the top of his lungs for everybody to "get the F**K out of [his] restaurant, you f***ing free-loaders!". One of the guys that works with him tried to placate him, which did not make much of a difference. He kicked everyone out, including my friend and I, who luckily were done eating. I'm voting with my feet on this one, and will no longer finance the owner's drug habits (and you better believe he has them)!

This place is just alright, and I can't really figure out why I've been inclined to revisit it several times. I guess that convenience would be the primary draw, but with so much delicious sushi out there, why pay great sushi prices for mediocrity? Don't get me wrong, their sushi's quite tasty; however, their rolls are on the small side, and the service is typically spotty at best. I've been to their happy hour a couple of times, and that's actually a good deal. Most rolls for $4, sake and beer are cheap - it's hard to go wrong. I think that's what I'll focus my efforts on if/when I return in the future. Dinner just seems like a rip-off with so little bang for your buck.

  • Claudine S.

The sushi here was subpar as far as the fact that I can get this sushi from anywhere else and be satisfied. The atmosphere is cool unless there are super loud talkers in here trying to be louder than the huge flat screen mounted on the wall or even the sound system they have playing. Now to get to the worst part, the service is atrocious! It was like the waiter was trying to avoid taking our order. It was very awkward and annoying. It took over 20 minutes to get our order put in plus another 10 minutes just to get some water. I would rather go to Kabuki to get sushi where I know I will be waited on in a timely manner.

no, no no. i was really craving some sushi & though i wasn't expecting much from this hole-in-the-wall place, i left disappointed. the countertop was littered with someone's personal items (scrapbooking supplies?) and stood there for a couple minutes before i was greeted by anyone. there were only 2 customers inside and they were loudly arguing about who was drunk and who wasn't (clearly they both were!) did i mention the place smelled like bleach. finally a waitress appeared and for some reason i still decided to order some takeout. the sushi chef emerged from the back smacking his chewing gum. he was incredibly unprofessional and unconcerned about his customers. the sushi itself was very mediocre. crispy rice tasted like it came out of a french fry fryer. california roll was flavorless and falling apart. on top of all this, it was overpriced. there is no chance i will return. none.
